1 Vocabulary review

2 Creative work Any idea or artistic creation that is recorded in some form, whether it’s hard copy or digital.

3 copyright A law that protects your control over the creative work you make so that people must get your permission before they copy, share, or perform your work.

4 Creative commons A kind of copyright that makes it easier for people to copy, share, and build on your creative work, as long as they give you credit for it.

5 Different types of photo licenses

6 license A clear way to define the copyright of your creative work so people know how it can be used.

7 Public domain Creative work that’s not copyrighted and therefore free for you to use however you want.

8 Fair use The ability to use a small amount of copyrighted work without permission, but only in certain ways and in specific situations (schoolwork and education, news reporting, criticizing or commenting on something, and comedy/parody).

12 Did you acknowledge the sources used by citing them?
You often use copyrighted work in your everyday lives. You: Use and enjoy media as consumers Incorporate media into your own creations (blogs, mash-ups,etc.) Whether you are using material for enjoyment or using it to create a new work, you should be responsible and respectful of other people’s creative work by providing proper credit.

13 To Acknowledge… To give credit to someone’s work you use by clearly stating their name, title of the work, year it was made, and a hyperlink.

14 piracy Stealing copyrighted work by downloading or copying it in order to keep, sell, or give it away without permission and without paying.

15 plagiarism Copying, “lifting”, or making slight changes to some or all of someone else’s work and saying you wrote it.

Like Henry, you have a right to: Copyright your own work Use copyrighted material with permission Apply fair use Always acknowledge the work you use by citing it.

Pirating, plagiarism, and illegal sharing on peer-to-peer sharing networks is disrespectful behavior that can have ethical and legal implications. Ref: the Ask, Acknowledge, Add Value process on handout.

20 Why should you avoid pirating?
It’s disrespectful to the creator and hurts the creator’s ability to get credit, get paid, and get respect for the work. It’s illegal. You can get caught and have to pay fines.

Henry likes to make mash-ups and remixes and put them online. What does he need to do to make this “fair use”? He should use just a small amount, not the whole work. He needs to change it by using it a different way. He has to add new meaning and make it original, put in his own voice. He has to use it in a certain situation, like for school, a news report, comedy, or to criticize or comment on something.

22 REMEMBER….. There are right and wrong ways to use copyrighted work. People who pirate or plagiarize not only risk getting in trouble at school or with the law, but their behavior is also unethical and disrespectful to creators. Students should always show respect for the creative work they use by acknowledging – or giving credit to – the work they use. Example: A book’s bibliography
