Function of the Organelles Thur. Feb. 6
Objective: Write down the function of each organelle and how it works to keep the cell working.
2
Organelles of the Cell
3
1. Cell Membrane* Outer boundary of cell Protects the cell
Controls what enters and leaves the cell
4
2. Cell Wall* Only found in plant cells Adds protection and support
Made of cellulose. Allows water and dissolved substances to pass through.
5
3. The Nucleus* Controls most activities in the cell
Contains all genetic information in the form of DNA.
6
4.Cytoplasm* Clear fluid within cell that contains all organelles
Moves materials throughout the cell
7
5. Endoplasmic Reticulum
Series of folded membranes that form sacs or tubes
8
6. Ribosomes Makes proteins in the cell
May be free in cytoplasm or attached to ER Proteins are vital to life, all cells must produce them
9
7. Golgi Bodies Saclike membranes used for storing/ packaging of chemicals Cells that make saliva or mucus have many Golgi bodies
10
8. Mitochondria Energy producers Powerhouse of the cell Sausage-shaped
Many mitochondria in muscle cells
11
9. Chloroplasts* Only found in plant like cells
Chloroplasts contain the pigment chlorophyll Suns energy absorbed here and turned to usable energy for the plant.
12
10. Vacuoles* Store food, water, or waste materials
Plant cells have large vacuoles
13
11. Lysosomes Found in Golgi bodies
Contain digestive enzymes to digest unwanted particles Help white blood cells to destroy bacteria
