Wilbur Teaching with Technology: Designing Opportunities to Learn Teaching with Technology: Designing Opportunities to Learn EDIT 5300 Instructional Design and Theory

2Dr. Ronald J. Anderson, Texas A&M International University Instructional Design The term design is used in the textbook to refer to the process educators use to intentionally plan learning experiences that are appropriate for their students.

3Dr. Ronald J. Anderson, Texas A&M International University Purpose of Course The book is bound together by the notion that the new electronic technologies are one of the primary, if not the primary, stimuli shaping new educational environments and new ways of designing instruction. Student learning is not accidental; it is the direct result of students’ experience of the learning opportunities teachers design.

4Dr. Ronald J. Anderson, Texas A&M International University New Technologies Each new technology—the alphabet, the printing press, the electronic technologies— profoundly changes the way humans come to know and interact with the world.

5Dr. Ronald J. Anderson, Texas A&M International University Socrates In Socrates’ tale, Thamus believed that the discovery of letters would create forgetfulness since others would trust the external written characters and not remember for themselves. Worse yet, letters would give their users not truth but only the semblance of truth.

6Dr. Ronald J. Anderson, Texas A&M International University Stages of Technology Stage 1 follows the line of least resistance; technology is applied in ways that do not threaten people. Stage 1 follows the line of least resistance; technology is applied in ways that do not threaten people. Stage 2 begins when new technology is merged with older technologies to perform functions we are already able to do but which may be done more efficiently with a new technology.
