MICE VC Aug '10J.S. GraulichSlide 1 MOM report o Achievements Since CM27 o Daily Operations o Run Plans o Summary Jean-Sebastien Graulich, Geneva

MICE VC Aug '10J.S. GraulichSlide 2 Achievements since CM27  A lot of Data Taken: 200 000 Target Actuations 200 000 Target Actuations 9 000 000 Particle Triggers 9 000 000 Particle Triggers  Emittance – Momentum Matrix Scan  Beam line studies (Q. Scans, D. Scans, DS Scans, Neutrals, etc…)  Online Reconstruction allows Online Tuning of the beam  DAQ Upgrade and included in Alarm Handler  Configuration Data Base in use

MICE VC Aug '10J.S. GraulichSlide 3 Data Taking  From 8:00 to 20:00 Every day ISIS makes Rest on Sunday (and Saturday too )  Start-up procedure well trained Less than 30 minutes  Every day starts with a reference run 400 pulses in 6 +/-200 M0 At fixed target delay and dip depth  A target “Calibration” run taken daily  All Hardware found stable Target, Detectors, Magnets, etc

MICE VC Aug '10J.S. GraulichSlide 4  -p Matrix   Several Beam line optics Prepared by Marco Apollonio Available on MICE Wiki (Chris Tunnell) http://mice.iit.edu/wiki/index.php/Beamline_Optics M0 and M1 correspond to different way to obtain the right distribution in phase-space after the diffuser according to G4BeamLine Main Goal: Comparison Data / Simulation

 -p Matrix Scan As on July 30 Negative polarity 140200240 M0M1M0M1M0M1 3 39,434 57,763 57,361 6 52,44045,28461,65250,52239,41745,942 10 42,49053,00650,44627,81443,87045,212 Positive polarity 140200240 M0M1M0M1M0M1 3 80,160 171,600 236,630 6 104,040103,042302,897225,200120,91177,177 10 85,09098,460120,00080,000105,17268,576 By Chris Heidt

MICE VC Aug '10J.S. GraulichSlide 6 Beam Line Studies   See previous talks Summer Blot, Rob Fletcher   Some important results Quad scans: We do observe X and Y offsets Need to be investigated Neutrals We do observe neutrals causing Triggers in TOF1 Even if all magnets are Off ! Only when we dip the target ! (scales with beam loss) Only when the beam blocker is open ! Proton absorber doesn’t affect the trigger rate

MICE VC Aug '10J.S. GraulichSlide 7 D1 Scan D2 kept constant, selecting the same momentum as for negatives (without proton absorbers) TOF1 rate (normalized to LumMon) D1 Current / Nominal By Chris Heidt

MICE VC Aug '10J.S. GraulichSlide 8 Online Tuning   Online Optimization Chris Rogers and Mark Rayner spent 2 days in MLCR A lot of improvement in Online Software Work still in progress   Main Goal Comparison data /Simulation (G4MICE)   Put stress on two issues CDB entry available only at the end of the RUN ! No way to use Quad currents from CDB Emphasize the need for CAM data in data stream Note: Already available, miss unpacking (the guy in charge is informed…) DAQ must be stable… Huge progress achieved last week (faulty board replaced)

9 Online Monitoring Online Monitoring running —Discovered lower hits in TOF0 when triggered on TOF1 Slides From Linda Coney

10 Online Reconstruction Selection of Good Muons —Good = green, bad = red Reconstructed Momentum (blue)

11 Online Reconstruction Basic Particle ID using TOFs —e, , pions, protons

12 Online Reconstruction Phase Space Plots Using TOFs (x, P x ) (y, P y ) —TOF0 (top plots) —TOF1 (bottom plots)

13 Online Data Quality Check TOF Monitor – y, x, combined distributions for TOFs —TOF0 (top plots) —TOF1 (middle plots) o Looks like one slab noisy —TOF2 (bottom plots)

14 Online Data Quality Check Time of Flight plots —TOF1-TOF0 (top plot) —TOF2-TOF1 (middle plot) o Note separation capability —TOF2-TOF0 (bottom plot) Run 2595 —TOF Calibration positron beam (300 MeV/c at target)

15 Online Reconstruction Plots Run 2595 —TOF Calibration positron beam (300 MeV/c at target) —Phase Space plots —Momentum reconstruction

16 Online Applications Many thanks to Mark Rayner, Chris Rogers, Vassil Verguilov —For writing the reconstruction applications, getting the data reader to work online, setting up the environment of OnReco01, getting the reconstruction to work online, updating to the most recent TOF calibration & changing the fake scatter plots to colors! JSG Comment: hard to look at all this at the same time

MICE VC Aug '10J.S. GraulichSlide 17 DAQ System Upgrade  Moved to new system on July the 17th Standard OS (Centos 5.4) DATE Updated James’ Software installed everywhere Controlled Installation Procedure  Important Consequences No more Spill Mismatches ! (or only very rarely) DAQ can now talk to EPICS DAQ sends error to Alarm Handler when No Triggers (ISIS is down, or target is stopped, or HV is OFF, etc…) Too Many Triggers (event to big. It will also stop if it happens too often) Mismatch reflecting serious problem (1 trigger difference is OK)

MICE VC Aug '10J.S. GraulichSlide 18 CDB in Use   We can now reload the magnet configuration from a previous run by a single click ! That really helps Many Thanks to David Forrest and James Leaver   Should serve as an example Was available for more than 6 months !!! Information was just not passed   Please use CDB offline as well   Important Note: All variables not available through EPICS are set to zero Use spread sheet for the time being

MICE VC Aug '10J.S. GraulichSlide 19 Daily Operations   Procedure revised We don’t need to switch the Target Power Electronics OFF for Controlled Access to the Hall Saves time Daily walk through revised and simplified More and more items are archived and/or under Alarm   Network Printer Available in MLCR Also accessible by USB

MICE VC Aug '10J.S. GraulichSlide 20 Run Plans   MOM failed to publish it in due time   Was discussed on Mondays (after MICO)   We have covered well the original Plan for this user run   4 working days left + Machine Physics   We still want to do Target Delay Studies, including Spill Profile (Rob Fletcher) Pion Data with Downstream Quads Off Straight lines have advantages… Quads and Dipole Scans with Pion beam Smaller Momentum Spread (“same” momentum in D1 and D2)   We’ll continue 8:00-20:00 running + Sunday afternoon (Target Delay)

MICE VC Aug '10J.S. GraulichSlide 21 Machine Physics   Agreement for Exploring High Beam loss: Up to 10V !!! Testing Target Delay Operational Range at 3V beam loss   Not possible  Activation study   Plan Saturday August the 14 th (MOM = Roumen Tsenov) Start at 16h30 and We have midnight permission… Start with ISIS at 50 Hz, scan target Delay (1 hour) Redo Adam Dobbs’ study sith positive Push it to *very* high beam loss and break record

MICE VC Aug '10J.S. GraulichSlide 22 Summary   A lot of data taken   A lot of Progress in MLCR   Only a short time left   Join the fun !
