2 Sejong the Great Hangul- Korean alphabet invented in 1443. Hangul is written in phonetic symbols. It has 10 vowels & 14 consonants. Sejong is also credited with many technological advances during his reign.

3 Japan Never conquered by China –Kamikaze- divine wind Korean culture bridge –Selective borrowing from China –Kanji- modified Chinese –Katakana- syllabic, phonetic –Confucian ideals of government –Capital modeled after China’s –Pagoda architecture- curving tile roofs –Arts- Tang music, dance, & gardens; tea ceremony

4 Japanese Feudal Society Emperor- figurehead, no political power Shogun-military and political leader of Japan Daimyo- high ranking samurai lords who provided shogun with warriors in exchange for land. Samurai- lower ranking warriors who served their daimyo in exchange for small manors. Bushido- “the way of the warrior” Peasants & Artisans- worked for their lord. Merchants- like Chinese society, generally held in contempt, considered unproductive
