1 Kingdom Monera Bacteria
PA State Standards

2 Bacteria and Cyanobacteria
What is a Moneran? Bacteria and Cyanobacteria They are unicellular and prokaryotes (no nucleus) Small, but bigger than viruses (300 across a period!)

3 What are the types of Bacteria?
Bacillus – Rod shaped bacteria Large Cocci – Sphere shaped bacteria Cocci Bacillus Spirillum Vibrio

4 What are the types of Monerans?
Cyanobacteria – Blue Green Algae An algal bloom BACTERIA – both good and bad

5 Quick look at Cyanobacteria
A.K.A – Blue green algae Contains Chlorophyll (photosynthesis) Reproduces quickly – nuisance to pool owners; pond scum Prokaryotic

6 Where can bacteria live?
They are located on your hands, eyelashes, and the bottom of your shoe. Found on plants, animals, and inside plants and animals Can live in freezing cold temperatures or in boiling temperatures in extreme environments

7 3Shapes of bacteria Cocci (-us) – round bacteria
Bacillus – rod shaped bacteria Vibrio – found in marine environments - Oysters Spirillum – Spiral shaped bacteria

8 This is from one bacteria after 10 hours.
Reproduction Bacteria division                                                                                                                   This is from one bacteria after 10 hours.

9 Reproduction Reproduce quickly through the process of binary fission – splitting into two In suitable conditions, can divide every 20 minutes!

10 Where do they get energy?
Are heterotrophs (food & respiration) and autotrophs (sun & photosynthesis

11 Got Energy? Saprophyte – send out digestive enzymes (decomposers)
Bacillus thuringiensis (bah-sill-us ther-in-gee-in-sis): a.k.a "Bt", a common soil bacterium. Wanted as a natural pest-killer in gardens and on crops. Saprophyte – send out digestive enzymes (decomposers) Parasite – lives in or on and weakens host Autotrophs – can make their own food (producers)

12 How can we treat harmful bacteria
How can we treat harmful bacteria? Take two of these and call me in the morning… Antibiotics – Chemical substances used to kill or slow the growth of bacteria. Anti = against Bio = life Greek for Against Life Do not kill viruses…only living organisms.
