4 The American Colonies By 1760, there were about 2 million colonists in North America. By 1760, there were about 2 million colonists in North America. -They had developed their OWN identity separate of the English culture. -Each of the 13 colonies had its own local government, currency, industry, and basically independence. -Colonists were not exactly united and had started to call themselves Virginians or Pennsylvanians, etc. depending on where they lived.
