Historical Context –Early Rome Established in 753 B.C. Ruled for 200 years by tyrannical Tarquin kings The Tarquins were overthrown in 510 B.C. A democratic republic was then established which lasted until the death of Julius Caesar. The Romans were very proud of their democratic system and were repulsed by the thought of being ruled by a king.

Cast of Major Characters Julius Caesar (ruler of Rome) Brutus (Caesar’s bestie) Cassius (hates Caesar) Cassius’ crew: Cinna, Casca, etc. Marc Antony (fan of Caesar) Calpurnia (Caesar’s wife) Portia (Brutus’ wife) A Soothsayer (fortune-teller)

About Caesar Born July 13, 100 B.C. Helped transform Rome into an empire by conquering areas of Britain, France, Europe, and Africa. Member of Rome’s first triumvirate (three-man council) Defeated his political enemy, Pompey, in the nation’s civil war

Was Caesar a Fair Ruler or a Dictator? PositivesNegatives Built irrigation systems, roads, parks, and buildings for Rome After defeating Pompey, he declares himself dictator for life Created the first calendar and newspaper All of his military victories became national holidays Created harsher penalties for blackmail Honored lavishly – even had coins printed with his face Never lost a warRomans feared Caesar’s army, the destruction of the Republic, and a return to dictatorship

As you read the play, consider Caesar’s leadership qualities. Is his story really a tragedy? Or did he get what he deserved?

So, Why Should We All Just Stab Caesar? At the start of the play, many people are in favor of Caesar. However, many people feared the possibility of one ruler. Therefore, a plan is hatched to take Caesar out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHYzn9y_B1M

Why Did Shakespeare Write About Caesar? – Caesar was well known by Elizabethans. Led Roman ships to Britain in 55 B.C., which paved the way for Roman occupation of Britain – When he became dictator, he was arguably the most powerful ruler the world had ever known. – He died in spectacular fashion. BEWARE: Shakespeare’s play is NOT 100% historically accurate – it was meant to entertain and teach a lesson.
