8 What are prefixes? They are syllables attached before a root to change its meaning Sometimes a prefix can completely change the meaning of a word. For example, the prefix un- gives the opposite meaning to any word to which it is attached. Some prefixes have more than one meaning, and sometimes several different prefixes can convey the same meaning.
