2 Pre-assessment Story Teacher reads the story aloud to the students or makes up a different one using 6 verb tenses. I woke (past) up late this morning. My alarm clock never went (past) off. I didn’t (past) realize that the electricity had gone (past perfect) out sometime during the night. I was so glad (past) that I had finished (past perfect) reading your stories before I went (past) to bed. The only thing I had forgotten (past perfect) to do was to write a story with six tenses. No problem, I thought (past) to myself. I will think (future) up a story while I drive (present) to work. It takes (present) me a good half hour to drive to school. I have made (present perfect) up a story in 30 minutes before, so I figured (past) that surely I will have come (future perfect) up with one by the time I got (past) to school. The weather was (past) terrible, the traffic was (past) heavy and half way to school, I realized (past) that I had forgotten (past perfect) my lunch. Now I have driven (present perfect) to school in half an hour before, but today it took (past) me 45 minutes. And I still have not made (present perfect) up a story that uses all 6 tenses! I just wonder (present) if I will have used (future perfect) all six tenses by the time I finish (present) telling you about my morning. Let’s all hope (present) I will use (future) them all soon!

4 Nine desks are arranged into a Tic-Tac-Toe pattern. Students are divided into two teams and line up on opposite sides of the Tic-Tac-Toe desks. The first player on Team 1 is shown a verb and a tense. The player must say the verb form in the tense given and use the verb in a short sentence. If the answer is correct, the player chooses one of the 9 Tic-Tac-Toe desks to sit at and a player from Team 2 takes a turn with a new verb. If the answer is incorrect, the first player on Team 2 gets a chance to earn a seat for Team 2 by supplying the correct verb and example sentence. If the player is correct, he or she may choose a seat and the next player from Team 2 takes a turn with a new verb. Play continues until each student has had a turn. Keep track of how many Tic-Tac-Toes each team wins. TENSE TIC-TAC-TOE 1) Swim- Present
