Energy
2
What is Energy Energy is the ability to cause change or do work TYPES – Electrical – Chemical – Radiant – Thermal – Mechanical – Thermal – Nuclear
3
Potential and Kinetic Potential Stored energy Due to height or position Has potential to change Kinetic Energy of motion Depends on mass and speed
4
Potential Energy Elastic potential – stored energy in something that can stretch or compress Chemical potential – stored energy in the chemical bonds Gravitational potential – stored energy due to position above the earth (they have ability to fall) depends on height
5
Law of Conservation of Energy Energy can not be created or destroyed it can only change forms If I put gas in my car, the chemical energy in the gas converts to mechanical energy to power the car some of the energy is given off as thermal energy REMEMBER – friction turns energy to heat – thermal energy
6
Energy Transformations The flow of energy from one type to another through a system or series of events Example – Chemical energy (CE) in ice cream → mechanical energy (ME) in your body → mechanical energy of the bike
7
Energy Types Electrical Energy (EE) – anything that uses electricity Chemical Energy (CE) – energy in bonds – food, burning Mechanical Energy (ME) – anything with moving parts Radiant Energy (RE) – light Thermal Energy (TE) – heat Nuclear Energy (NE) – radioactive
