Mr. Roe 6 th Grade Social Studies

 You have recently learned about the importance of the Nile River, and the surrounding valley.  You have also learned that Egypt was divided into two kingdoms until one man, Narmer, united both.  Like Mesopotamia (and societies around the world to this very day), Egyptian society had strong class divisions.

 Egypt was ruled by all powerful pharaohs  Egyptians believed in many gods and goddesses and in life after death (afterlife)  The Egyptians of the Old Kingdom built huge stone pyramids as tombs for their pharaohs

 Reading Notes  Cornell Notes  Graphic Organizer on Egyptian Beliefs  Persuasive Writing (Draft and Final)  Logical Note-Taking of Pyramid Building  Cinderella Play (Group Work)  Other Assigned Work (you will be told if there is any) *These assignments will be collected and graded on Friday and put into your social studies portfolios

 Discuss the role of pharaohs in Egypt  Explain the religious beliefs of the Egyptians  Describe the Egyptian pyramids and tombs

 Pharaoh  Deity  Embalming  Mummy  Pyramid  Period  Welfare  Structure  Principle

 Would you like your student body president, the captain of your sports team, or another leader in your life to have unlimited power? What can people do with unlimited power? What if our president had unlimited power?

 2600 B.C., Old Kingdom period began in Egypt  Egyptian kings were called pharaohs  Pharaoh means “great house”  Pharaohs were all powerful  Appointed officials (what do you think they did?)  Pharaohs considered to be the son of Re (sun god)

 Egyptians were polytheistic (worshiped many deities)  Main god was Re (why do you think so?) Re/Ra  Isis was the most important goddess (represented loyal wife and mother)  Believed in a pleasant life after death  Book of the Dead (Studied to obtain entrance into afterlife)  Osiris would decide if they were granted access to the afterlife  Initially, only pharaohs and special people could enter the afterlife

 Pharaohs body needed to be preserved so the spirit could make the trip to the afterlife  Dead pharaohs continue to look after Egypt  Embalming -Removal of organs -Body salted, preserved, spiced and perfumed -Wrapped in linens (mummified)  After, put into coffins, and placed into tomb

 Explain the embalming process  How do you think Egyptians learned so much about the human body?

 Herbs and drugs were used to treat many illnesses  Good at sewing up cuts (stitches) and setting broken bones  Some doctors focused on particular parts of the body (world’s first specialized doctors)  Wrote world’s first medical books on papyrus scrolls

Egyptian Beliefs

 What do you think the pyramids were (why did the Egyptians build them?)  Size of several city blocks, or your school  Full of furniture, jewelry, clothing, food etc..  Protected from floods, grave robbers, and animals (why was this important?)

Video Clip  Open to page 169  Read “How Was a Pyramid Built”  Logically outline the process of pyramid building

 2540 B.C., Egyptians built the Great Pyramids of Giza  Close to modern day Cairo (capital of Egypt)  Built for King Khufu  2 million stone blocks, weigh 2.5 tons each  Size of nine football fields  Tallest structure in the world for 4,000 years  Built without using animals or special tools!

 Some Egyptians today want to close the pyramids to tourists. What is your opinion on this issue?  You will write your response for HW. We will talk about persuasive writing in ELA, and then we will revise and edit your responses later this week.

 You will continue to practice your research skills. This week, I want you to use the internet to try to find answers to the following question: How does technology help to reveal the past? Hint: Scientists use X rays and CT scans to look inside mummies. Remember, once you find a source, you must write down the web address!

Pre-Reading  What do you already know about fairy tales?  What can you tell the class about Ancient Egypt? Post-Readings Literary Terms: Foreshadowing Irony

How does Egyptian medicine impact us today? What procedures or skills do doctors use today that were also used by the ancient Egyptians?
