3 The Big Cities  Megalopolis  A number of cities and suburbs that blend into one very large urban area  One can drive from Washington, D.C. to Boston without leaving urban areas  Commute  The travel from home to work each day  Population density - average number of people per sq. mile  The Northeast is the most densely populated area of the U.S.

12 The South  Tourism - a major industry in the southern states  Sun Belt - broad area of the U.S. stretching from the southern Atlantic Coast to the coast of California  Known for its warmer weather  Washington, D.C.  Nation’s capital, not a state  District of Columbia  1790 - 1st planned city in the U.S.

Forty-niners - miners that came looking for gold, scarred the landscape with their mining techniques Logging, dam-building, and mining has left its affect on the west National Parks created to elp preserve natural resources –Yosemite National Park –Yellowstone National Park

19 The West Today Portland, Oregon –Important port city –Industry, manufacturing, trade still important San Jose, California –Silicon Valley –Heart of computer industry Mass Transit - system of transportation used to transport large numbers of people
