The Muscular System By: Matt Mosley and Kywand Ross

Why Are They So Important? Muscles are one of the most important parts of the human body. Without muscles, the body will not be able to move. The muscular system works because it can move, bend and straighten. Muscles work in opposing teams in order to create a full range of movement. One set of muscles on one side moves, and the other side then pulls the muscles back into the original position, which creates a movement.

Strength training builds muscle endurance along with muscle strength. Preventing muscle deterioration Increasing or maintaining bone mineral density Decreasing body fat and increasing lean muscle mass. Increasing lean muscle mass can help your body burn calories more efficiently. Why Is Strengthening Your Muscles Important?

Major Organs In the Muscular System The Heart is an important organ dealing with the muscular system But the heart muscle is special because, it sends blood around your body. The blood provides your body with the oxygen and nutrients it needs. It also carries away waste. Before each beat, your heart fills with blood. Then its muscle contracts to squirt the blood along. When the heart contracts, it squeezes. Your heart does this all day and all night, all the time.

Wait There is More!!?? Another muscle is the tongue The muscles in the back of your tongue help you make certain sounds, like the letters "k" and hard "g" (like in the word "go"). Try saying these letters slowly, and you'll feel how the back of your tongue moves against the top of your mouth to create the sounds. The front part of the tongue is very flexible and can move around a lot, working with the teeth to create different types of words. This part also helps you eat by helping to move food around your mouth while you chew. Your tongue pushes the food to your back teeth so the teeth can grind it up.

What System Does This Interact With?? The muscular system interacts with the skeletal system Movement is a result of contraction of muscles and the skeleton helps transmit that movement.

Are There Muscular Diseases ? Muscular dystrophy is a genetic disorder that gradually weakens the body's muscles. It's caused by incorrect or missing genetic information that prevents the body from making the proteins needed to build and maintain healthy muscles.

Can Muscular Dystrophy Affect Children? Duchenne muscular dystrophy is the most severe form. It affects young boys, because it causes muscle weakness, usually beginning in the legs. Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy begins in late childhood to early adulthood. It affects males and female, because it causes weakness in the muscles around the upper legs and shoulders.

IS THERE A CURE FOR DYSTROPHY? There are no cures for any of the muscular dystrophies and few drugs that have any effect. Treatment of muscular dystrophy is mainly directed at preventing the complications of weakness, including decreased scoliosis, heart defects, and respiratory weaknesses

Are The Muscular Diseases? Dermatomyositis is one of a group of muscle diseases that involve inflammation of the muscles The inflammatory cells of the immune system attack the blood vessels that supply muscles and skin

Can Dermatomyositis Affect Children? Juvenile dermatomyositis is rare, affecting 3,000 to 5,000 US children under the age of 18. Children experience weakness with activities that have not been a problem before, such as getting into a car or standing up from a chair.

Is There A Cure? In most people once this disease begins there is no clear way to cure the disease. There are however several effective treatments which exist that can improve a person’s muscle strength. In most cases people can resume their usual level of function. Further research is being done and it is hopeful that within years a cure will be found.

How Can Your Muscular system Healthy? Aerobic exercises Healthy diet Fat should make up no more than 30 percent of a person's total daily calorie intake. Breads, cereals, pastas, fruits, and vegetables should form the bulk of a person's diet; meat, fish, nuts, and cheese and other dairy products should make up a lesser portion.
