A higher achieving child is expected to master the topics within the year group. Showing greater depth of understanding and application. Topics covered have been tweaked.

New Maths Curriculum Several skills and concept are now going to be introduced earlier. E.g. adding and subtracting fractions; algebra; circumference and area of circles. The major difference is with arithmetic. Much larger numbers are used. The formal column methods are now the expected method.

School will… Teach the new curriculum Provide homework including: SATS style questions, relevant work for consolidation, assessment and revision. Use a range of activities, including web-based games and activities. Assess on a regular basis against the new test criteria to monitor progress and react appropriately for each child.

We ask home to… Check that homework is done (set on a Tuesday) with due care and attention. Then handed in, on time. Enable your child to have the basic equipment in school every day. Reinforce our high expectations. Everyone can achieve with motivation and effort. Encourage your child to attend school every day.

English Curriculum SATs

New Curriculum September 2015 There are three parts to English KS2 SATs: Writing - internally assessed and moderated Reading – externally assessed SPaG – externally assessed Levels no longer exist but there is an expectation that a child achieves the given curriculum for the year. A higher achieving child is expected to master the topics within the year group showing greater depth of understanding and application.

Writing There is greater focus on technical accuracy and pupils are expected to use more challenging punctuation within their writing. Pupils should use features and language to suit the purpose of their writing and target audience. Pupils are prepared through planning and analysis of models in lessons but final assessment pieces are completed independently.

SPaG Pupils will have two sections to complete during this external assessment. The first section will be a punctuation and grammar test. There will be 40-50 questions and a time allocation of 45 minutes. The second will be a spelling test, consisting of 20 questions, that will take approximately 15 minutes. The words will be read aloud in a sentence and then the key word is repeated.

Example: The knife wasn’t sharp enough to cut through the meat. The word is knife.

Typical SPaG question Questions will consist of selected and constructed response. Examples: Selected: identify the adjectives in the sentence. Constructed: rewrite the sentence in the present tense.

Reading Pupils will read three texts of varying length and purpose. They will answer between 35-40 questions, in one hour, that will become increasingly challenging as the paper progresses.

Question types: Ranking/ordering ‘Number the events below to show the order in which they happen in the story’ Labelling ‘Label the text to show the title of the story’ Find and copy ‘Find and copy one word that suggests what the weather is like in the story’ Short constructed response ‘What does the bear eat?’ Open-ended response ‘Look at the sentence that begins Once upon a time. How does the writer increase the tension throughout this paragraph? Explain fully, referring to the text in your answer.’

At home Your child will be given a study book as a reference and for revision. Reading Listen to your child read and question them about their reading. Discussion is powerful. Reading homework: encourage your child to underline key words before answering the reading questions. Ask them to verbalise what they have to do. Spelling Ask your child to write the word out three times and test them. Writing Encourage your child to practise their SPaG homework by writing paragraphs using the skill they’ve been practising.

How Do We Develop your Child’s Literacy? High expectations in all written work – stickers on pupils’ books. All teachers ‘mark for literacy’ in all subjects. Subject-specific vocabulary is shared and reinforced through displays, resources and teachers’ marking. Accelerated Reader and DEAR. Timetabled weekly library lessons. Superb library facilities with qualified, experienced librarians at both sites. A range of extra-curricular activities (inter-house competitions, visiting authors, book awards) and student leadership opportunities. Targeted intervention to support and extend pupils in key areas (e.g. handwriting, spelling, reading or writing).

What are Accelerated Reader and DEAR? Accelerated Reader A graduated reading programme matched to each pupil’s ability. ‘Every Child a Reader’. Minimum of four books per term. Pupils carry a reading book with them to every lesson! Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) Weekly reading event with all KS2 and 3 pupils and teachers. Promotes a reading culture within the school; staff act as reading role models. Opportunities for pupils and staff to share, discuss and enjoy reading.

Why is Reading so Important? Research by the National Literacy Trust shows that: Only 8.5% of pupils who describe themselves as ‘never’ reading independently achieve at or above their expected levels at both KS3 and 4. This figure rises to 95.4% amongst pupils who read independently ‘every day’.

How Can You Help? A sk them about their reading. B e a role model. C heck that they are reading regularly.
