Standards Use Electronic Resources Effectively ◦ Use the Internet to find information Produce Quality Work ◦ Demonstrate Workplace Technical Skills ◦ Use spreadsheets to compile data

Objectives In this final performance activity you will know how to use Excel to solve real world problems. You will also use the Internet to find specific information. ◦ You will continue building upon your knowledge of Excel spreadsheets and the Internet and put that knowledge to work to determine a monthly budget. ◦ You will do this by creating a simple budget spreadsheet and determine what items need to be included in a budget. You will understand that learning Excel will enable you to use information by giving you the ability to analyze it.

Kyle’s Lesson You are now 18 years old. You have decided that you will not go to college but rather you want to go out on your own. Since you have chosen not to go to college your parents have decided that you cannot live at home. Therefore, you must find a job and get an apartment. Since you do not have a college degree or any relevant work experience you will have to get a minimum wage job. All of your friends are going to college out of town so you will not be able to have a roommate. You must either find a studio apartment or a one bedroom. Because your parents still love you, they will scrounge around and find old furniture you can have so you don’t have to spend any money on furniture, dishes, etc. All other expenses are yours!

Budget Items – Must Have Rent$ find online Food$ Xcel Energy$ ◦ (Heat, a/c, elec.) Cable$ Internet$ Home Phone$ Cell phone$ Clothes$?? You decide Entertainment$?? You decide Transportation$?? You decide ◦ (Gas, car, maintenance, bus) Medicine$?? You decide

Kyle’s Lesson Create a new Excel Spreadsheet. Save to your server folder as Budget Income – find out the minimum wage. ◦ Hint – www.ask.comwww.ask.com ◦ Copy/paste information into your Excel Spreadsheet Decide how much you will work each month. ◦ number of hours you will work in a day ◦ number of days you will work in a week ◦ Put this information into your Excel Spreadsheet Find an apartment to rent. ◦ Hint – www.rockymountainnews.comwww.rockymountainnews.com  classifieds  apartments unfurnished for rent  search Copy/paste apartment information into your word document. Make sure the apartment you choose has actual $$$ listed for rent

Using Your Budget Spreadsheet Include expense items and expenses as shown on the OH done by the class. ◦ Formula 1 - Add the total expenses. ◦ Formula 2 - Multiply your wage by the number of hours you will work in a day. ◦ Formula 3 - Multiply the daily income by the number of days you will work in a week and multiply that by 4 to get your total income. ◦ Formula 4 - Subtract your total expenses from your total income to see how well you budget each month. You CANNOT have more expenses than income. You CANNOT change your hourly wage.

Analysis You need to make several graphs to illustrate your expenses. ◦ Create a graph to show what percent your rent is of your net income. (rent/net income ◦ Create a graph to show what percent your food and entertainment expenses are of your net income (entertainment includes cable and Internet). (entertainment/net income) ◦ Create a graph that details what percent of each expense is as compared to total expenses. (each expense/total expenses)
