What Are Waves A wave is a disturbance or oscillation that travels through space accompanied by a transfer of energy There are basically two types of waves Mechanical Waves – which propagate through a medium which gets deformed Electromagnetic Waves – which do not require a medium and can travel in a vacuum.

Mechanical Waves An example of Mechanical waves are: The sound waves. Sound waves are from about 20 Hz (cycles per second) to several Giga Hertz Humans can hear sound waves between 20 Hz and 20 KHz Sound Waves above 20 KHz are known as Ultrasonic Waves

Resonance When sound travels through a medium and strikes another with the same natural frequency it too starts vibrating and acted upon by it

Effects of Resonance It is well known that high pitched sounds – lower wavelengths, higher frequency results in disastrous effect. An opera singer may Break a wine Glass

A supersonic jet Breaks, window Panes A bridge broken By Resonance

Uses of Ultrasound Ultrasonic devices are used to detect objects and measure distances. Ultrasonic imaging is used in human and veterinary medicine. In non-destructive testing of products and structures, ultrasound is used to detect invisible flaws.

 Industrially, ultrasound is used for cleaning and for mixing, testing, and to accelerate chemical processes. Organisms such as bats and porpoises use ultrasound for locating prey and obstacles

Algae are nothing but a group and bunch of bacteria. The Biotech Ultranet device generates low ultra sound frequencies which kills these bacteria so that the algae gradually degrades and disappears.

 Similar to ultrasonic cleaning, biological cells can be disintegrated. High power ultrasound produces cavitation in plant cell, causing disruption or collapse of gas vesicles and subsequent loss of buoyancy, damage to or destruction of cellular organelles, cell death, changes in cellular osmotic potential, inhibition of photosynthesis and cell division, destruction of cell membranes. 

 In normal operation, without ultrasonic micro vibration, they colonize a surface and send out biochemical compounds that are recognized by other colony forming bacteria (a process known as quorum sensing).

Bio-film grows and attracts algae to attach into its matrix. Initial bio-film formers are anaerobic bacteria that are aerobic during their planktonic stage where they seek new areas to colonize

 The ultrasonic micro vibration interrupts the process and prevents biofilm formation. Without an ease to be able to attach to bio-film matrix, algae will not get a foothold to grow into the colony formers and do not reproduce when they are in the planktonic state and any gel groups they may have formed will tend to de clump and disperse.

In basic fundamental terms, the algae get shaken to bits – just like the opera singer smashing a wine glass with that perfect note!

The control box contains a microchip which is programmed to digitally generate a range of ultrasound frequencies which the transducer then transfers to the water body. When these pulses strike the algal cells, the cells begin to resonate.

If algae, such as the blue/greens, have a gas vacuole (buoyancy), then the vacuole also starts to resonate - to such an extent that it continues to increase in size. There then comes a point when the vacuole becomes unstable and collapses (cavitation), making the algae sink to the bottom of the pond.

The complex pattern of ultrasonic vibrations through the water causes the algae vacuole cell wall to resonate and break, much like a glass breaking from a high pitched sound. The broken vacuole wall eliminates its ability to grow and reproduce, while the same vibrations are harmless to humans, animals, fish and aquatic plants.

 Algal species which don’t have gas vacuoles react differently. The vibrations from the ultrasound cause the inner cell wall of the algal cell (plasmalemma) to become detached from the outer cell wall – this means that water, gases and nutrients can neither be absorbed or expelled and as a result the algae dies

Bio Film Removal Not only will the ultrasound kill off the algae, but it also eliminates ‘biofilm’ – this is the ‘slime’ that can be found growing on submerged surfaces. Biofilms provide a substrate onto which algae can attach and grow.

Now your water systems will become clearer and healthier from destruction of algae and other certain root-parasitic fungi without having to apply environmentally harmful chlorine or any other chemicals for this purpose.

The ultrasound is also known to work with upon water borne pathogens such as E.coli bacteria and so can also be used for water treatment, thereby reducing the need for chemical treatments.

 Why is the Biotech Ultranet product special?  · State of the art technology  · Transducer emits a multi-layered ultrasonic pattern  · Ultrasound generated in asymmetrical pulses for optimal efficiency  · Transducers designed specifically for each model  · Available in either 240v AC or 3 - 24V DC models  · Low power consumption of only 8 to 10 watts.  · Solar power-pack options available for all DC models

Biotech Ultranet system of Ultrasound was recently used in Karanji Lake, Mysore for treatment of Algae in a section of it. The upcoming slides show the sequence of treatment.
