What’s What? Social Stories: Social Stories are a tool for teaching social skills to children with autism and other additional needs. Social stories are designed to be personal. Addressing issues or situations that children are having difficulties with, for example behaviour or social skills. The issue/situation is recorded in an accessible way for the specific child. It should be clear and precise, focusing on the key points: who, what, how, when and why. The aim of the story is to teach appropriate behaviour/responses, develop understanding or make the child more comfortable. (Polyxo, 2010) Extra Information

ICT is... A tool to support independent learning A great example of collaboration Versatile to the learners needs A support for communication Essential in the 21 st century A facilitator of quality work A facilitator of learning An inclusive tool Motivating Engaging (The Independent Review of the Primary Curriculum, 2008., Potter and Darbyshire, 2007. & Townsend cited in Wheeler, 2005)

Medium Term Plan

KEY SKILLS Communication: The majority of the work is completed in pairs, which will encourage the pupils to communicate effectively. The Feed back and reflections to the class will support active listening and choosing appropriate language for the audience, topic and purpose. Information Technology This scheme of work will recap and consolidate existing skills while developing new skills. It also shows the diversity of technology in supporting learning and the variety of skills ICT that are accessible and needed in the 21 st century. Working with Others The scheme is mostly pair or class work. This creates opportunities for pupils to work with a variety of pupils and encourages cooperation, listening and respect.

KEY SKILLS Improving Own Learning and Performance During this scheme of work, there are several class discussion which enable pupils to elicit their own success criteria. This is supported by several opportunities for pupils to reflect on their participation, skills and development, which will help to set future targets. Problem Solving The collaboration required for this scheme of work will support pupils to use their problem solving skills to make decisions, and will encourage trial and error when testing new skills.

THINKING SKILLS Information-processing Skills Creating the social story will involve processing information for the story board and during the creation of the movie. Reasoning Skills These will be demonstrated during the collaboration of ideas, during feedback and when pupils validate their decisions. Enquiry Skills Pupils can demonstrate and develop these skills when they are participating in group discussion, during planning and when reflecting.

THINKING SKILLS Creative Thinking Skills These skills can be used and extended during the planning and creating stages of this scheme. Evaluation Skills Pupils can develop and demonstrate this skills when critically evaluating and reflecting on their own work and their peers work. This includes both process and topic.

Assessment Opportunities This scheme will support assessment opportunities by: Observation Pupil reflection Validation of choices Participation in class discussion And Skills demonstrated in creation of the social story movie.

Implication for Future Teaching Upon reflection I have further developed my understanding of the need to provide children with opportunities to demonstrate and develop a variety ICT skills in order to support them in the 21 st century. These skills are easily intertwined with other learning as a tool to support learning. Information
