River Study and The Scientific Method Warm-Ups for September 26-30

Monday, September 26, 2011 Your Mission: You have been asked to study the water of the Snake River Basin to determine water quality. At your table, brainstorm possible questions for this research or lab using the structure of RoundRobin. Everyone at your table shares a question and your team writes the questions on a piece of scrap paper. Pick the three best questions and write them on your warm-up sheet. Now circle the best question of the three to be shared with the class.

Monday, September 26, 2011 Questions from each table:

Monday, September 26, 2011 The Question from this lab: How do changes in an ecosystem affect biodiveristy?

Tuesday, September 27, 2011 What is step 2 of the scientific method? Jot everything that you think you know about the water in Summit County.

Tuesday, September 27, 2011 Once you have exhausted your ideas, consider the following: Now, as you think about these things add more ideas to your “jotting.” What is step 2 of the scientific method? Activate Background Knowledge Jot everything that you think you know about the water in Summit County. People who care about the water in Summit County Activities that negatively impact the water quality People who use the water Recreational Uses of Summit County’s water

Tuesday, September 27, 2011 What is step 2 of the scientific method? Write at least 3 sentences stating the information you know about activities near the Snake River Basin.

Wednesday, September 28, 2011 1.What is Step 3 of the Scientific Process?

Wednesday, September 28, 2011 1.What is Step 3 of the Scientific Process? Write a hypothesis in the If…, then … because format. Remember the hypothesis needs to relate to the question.

Wednesday, September 28, 2011 1.What is Step 3 of the Scientific Process? 2.Let’s Practice: Write a hypothesis in the correct format for each lab. Johan wants to know “How does length affect how far a paper airplane can fly?”

Wednesday, September 28, 2011 1.What is Step 3 of the Scientific Process? 2.Let’s Practice: Write a hypothesis in the correct format for each lab. Johan wants to know “How does length affect how far a paper airplane can fly?” Yecenia “Which brand of bubble gum has the longest lasting flavor?”

Wednesday, September 28, 2011 1.What is Step 3 of the Scientific Process? 2.Let’s Practice: Write a hypothesis in the correct format for each lab. Johan wants to know “How does length affect how far a paper airplane can fly?” Yecenia “Which brand of bubble gum has the longest lasting flavor?” Mr. Rivera wants to know “How does a class-full of chatty sixth graders affect the teacher?”

Wednesday, September 28, 2011 Now we will write a hypothesis in the correct format for River Study lab. If we observe the water quality of the Snake River, then the data will show an increase/decrease in biodiversity based on….

Wednesday, September 28, 2011 Write a metaphor or simile for this step of the scientific method. 3. What is Step 4 of the Scientific Process?

Wednesday, September 28, 2011 Write a mini-hypothesis linking two of the tests we did. For example: If the DO is less than 50% then the biodiversity will be…. Write the procedure 3. What is Step 4 of the Scientific Process?

1.What are steps 5 and 6 in the scientific process? 2. How was data collected in the Snake River Lab? 3. How is data being analyzed in the Snake River Lab? Thursday, September 29, 2011

1.What are steps 5 and 6 in the scientific process? 2. How was data collected in the Snake River Lab? 3. How is data being analyzed in the Snake River Lab? Step 5 of the scientific process is taking observations and collecting data and step 6 is analyze data. Data was collected during a field trip to the Snake River Basin and four trials were completed of each test Data is being analyzed by rating each test site for the health of the river and by comparing data between the various testing sites. Thursday, September 29, 2011

1.How many manipulated variables can there be in a lab? 2.What is the manipulated variable in the Snake River Study lab? 3.List at least three controls used in the Snake River Study. Friday, September 30, 2011

1.How many manipulated variables can there be in a lab? 2.What is the manipulated variable in the Snake River Study lab? 3.List at least three controls in the Snake River Study lab. Only 1 variable can be changed in any experiment, Otherwise you do no know what is causing the effects. The manipulated variable in the Snake River Study is the river testing site. Some controls in the Snake River Study are using the SAME procedures for pH test, the zinc test, the biodiversity test, the dissolved oxygen test, and the copper test. Friday, September 30, 2011
