Resource Development

By Chief Dan George Have I left the Eagle to Soar in Freedom? The time will soon be here when my grandchild will long for the cry of a loon the flash of a salmon, the whisper of spruce needles, or the screech of an eagle. But he will not make friends with a ny of these creatures and when his heart aches with longing he will curse me. Have I done all to keep the air fresh? Have I cared enough about the water? Have I left the eagle to soar in Freedom? Have I done everything I could to earn my grandchild’s fondness?

What is a Resource? A resource can be anything that is useful. Resources has been categorized three ways. Natural, Capital and Human.

Natural Resources Natural resources are materials that can be found in nature and used for human need. They are divided into non-renewable resources. - are resources that cannot be replaced once they are used up. Such materials have been created by nature over millions of years ago. Examples of these types of resources are fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) and metal ores.

Continued… Renewable resources - are those which will continue to supply materials indefinitely as long as the system that produces them is not disrupted. Examples of renewable resources are forests, fisheries, farming and freshwater.

Capital Resources The way a society creates wealth. Any asset used in the production of products and/or services. Examples of capital would be money, machinery, factories, and education. Russia (case study in textbook) is an example of a country rich in natural resources, but low on capital resources needed to develop it.

Human Resources The people within any society can help in creating a strong nation or a poor nation. The human resource, if healthy and educated, can create a rich economy and be able to compete on a global market. The same being said, however, a society where the people are sick and uneducated will hinder the economic prosperity of a country.

Three population traits a prosperous country must have 1.There must be enough of a population to have a productive work pool and a domestic market (small businesses and corporations) 2.The people must be healthy so that they will be able to work productively and raise a healthy family. 3.There must be an opportunity for education and career training, which will help them to become meaningful members of a society.

Case study assignment in textbook 1. a) In the case study on page 210, why is Linda Manzer upset about the way forest resources are being managed in Canada? What suggestions could be made to improve resource management in this industry? b) Examine Figures 9.13 and 9.14. Are the concerns of this one person important when measured against a billion- dollar industry that employs 300 000 Canadians? Why, or why not? 2.Review the Case study “Russia’s Capital Crisis” on page 213. Explain why capital resources are necessary to develop natural resources.

Assignment continued… Review the Case study “Human Resources the Key to Irish Miracle: on page 217. a) What evidence is there in this Case Study that Ireland’s human resources were important in improving the nation’s economy? What aspect of Ireland's human resources attracted foreign investors to the country? b) What are some of the drawbacks to Ireland’s economic “miracle?” On the whole, do think the improved economy has been good for the country? Why, or why not? c) What lesson does the Case Study suggest Canadian policy makers could learn from a careful study of the Irish miracle?
