Welcome to a virtual tour of Delaware!

Where Delaware is located Delaware is in the Mid- Atlantic region of the east coast of the United States Northern Delaware is about one hour from Philadelphia and 2.5 hours from New York City. Southern Delaware is closer to Baltimore, about 2 hours away and 3 hours from the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C.

Geographic Features of Delaware Delaware is flat. It is flanked on the east by the Delaware Bay and River which is a major port highway for international ships and liners, and on the west by the eastern shore of Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay. The southern part of Delaware has 24.5 miles (39.42 k) of ocean front, 12 miles (19 k) of which are reserved in a state park setting. The rest are spread out among 4 principal resort areas: Bethany Beach, Fenwick Island, Lewes & Rehoboth Beach.

Our Three Counties Because of our small size, Delawareans have a great deal in common But there are differences in each county Belonging to 4-H is one organization that unites us all!

New Castle County The most urban county and home to our largest city, Wilmington, which has 72,000 people Wilmington is the home of the DuPont Company, many banks, and businesses. New Castle has urban and suburban areas and some farm land. This is where Josh, Chris and Michael live!

Winterthur Gardens

Wilmington has a professional baseball team The baseball season in America begins in April. The Wilmington Blue Rocks are the minor league ‘farm team’ of the Kansas City Royals

New Castle County and nearby points In nearby Philadelphia, our Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776 Delaware was the first state that ratified the U.S. Constitution in 1787 The area around the Brandywine River including what is now greater Wilmington and Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania is rich with our early American history. Our state flag:

Kent County Home of the state capital, Dover, where the state’s laws are proposed, discussed and voted into law. Home of Dover Air Force Base Home of the Delaware State Fair Suburban, with more rural or farm land than New Castle. This is where Ashley lives!

Sussex County Seaford is the largest city, but it is more like a ‘town’ compared to Dover and Wilmington. Is known for its resort beaches. Tourism is a major economy. Many people choose Sussex County as a place to retire. Largely agricultural, but suburban growth is increasing at a rapid rate. This is where Jillian lives!

Rehoboth Beach Rehoboth is busy year round! It is the busiest Delaware resort beach. It is called the “Nation’s Summer Capital” because many people from the Washington D.C. area vacation here

Delaware’s Economy In the average Delaware family, both parents work. Americans are very diverse how they spend or invest in their income. Delaware is one of only three states that does not have a sales tax. Therefore, many people travel here to shop and there are many stores. Of course, in 4-H youth learn how to be smart consumers and the importance of saving and using money wisely!

Culture Visiting Delaware gives you a good idea what all of America is like. Favorite beverage? Coke vs. Pepsi Lemonade vs. Iced Tea Here are what some typical Delaware homes look like

What we like to eat Our tastes are quite varied! Most teenagers adore Pizza! We have pizza stores everywhere. Hot Dogs and hamburgers, of course, are American favorites! A typical American dinner consists of some type of protein (beef, chicken, pork or fish), a vegetable and a starch (potato or rice). Hot dogs & hamburgers on the grill. Fried chicken Roast beef, mashed potatoes and peas.

Breakfast? If we are in a hurry, we will eat just about anything in the morning! Usually on weekends, families have more time and a traditional breakfast may consist of: Eggs, bacon or sausage, toast, home fries and a unique Delaware food: scrapple Cereal French Toast or Waffles Pancakes Doughnuts Coffee, tea and many fruit juices

Americans are crazy about sports! New Castle residents usually “root” for teams based in Philadelphia Sussex County residents tend to favor sport teams that originate in Baltimore and Washington D.C. Kent County, being in the middle, follows both major cities. But they have one thing New Castle and Sussex doesn’t… NASCAR

DELAWARE – THE FIRST STATE This is our home. We hope you’ll visit us soon!
