7 The Color Wheel There are 12 hues (another term for “color” in the spectrum of color. The basic tool we use when dealing with color

8 The Primary Colors The basic 3 colors
Cannot be created by mixing pigments together. All other colors are made from these

9 The Secondary Colors Made by mixing equal parts of 2 Primary colors.

10 The Tertiary Colors Made by mixing equal parts of a primary and a secondary color. Named by the Primary color first.

11 Value The lightness or darkness of a hue
Amount of black and white in a color

12 Shade Color + Black

13 Tints White + color Also called pastels

14 Color + the color’s compliment
Tones Color + Gray OR Color + the color’s compliment

15 Intensity The brightness or dullness of a hue—based on its purity;
Changed by mixing a hue with its complement Creates a tone High Intensity Low Intensity

16 Warm Colors The reds, yellows, and oranges of the color wheel
Seen as advancing Make a space appear smaller Evoke a feeling of warmth and excitement

17 Cool Colors The blues, greens, and violets of the color wheel
Seen as receding Make a space appear larger Evoke a feeling of coolness, calmness and rest

18 Neutral Colors Also called achromatic (without color)
Colors not found on the color wheel White, black, and gray are true neutrals Brown, beige, tan, and cream are used as neutrals
