1 MAVERICK LACROSSE PRESENTATION TO Other Towns

2 Program Philosophy We stress fun and that everyone plays Zero tolerance for lack of respect to coaches, refs and fellow players No provincialness - kids play with and against one another..the combination of other towns is presented as an enriching experience

3 Notoriety We believe that this year we are the largest non-for-profit lacrosse program in NJ Over 30 towns as members Sponsored by both Sports Foundations and Pop Warner Programs All coaches finger printed and Rutgers Certified. The Program and its books are audited by Schwaeger & Assoc in Red Bank

4 Notoriety (cont.) Only program in NJ to start children at Kindergarten. Only program actively seeking to work with other Sports Foundations to help them develop their own programs. Only program working with both middle schools and high schools to develop lax programs

5 Why Join Mav Lax To start your own program you need a minimum of 100 kids. Until you have that number you can offer our program. Enriching experience for kids to play with kids from other towns No pressure to take kids from other programs in town and promote the start of a new sport.

6 Why Join Mav Lax (cont.) We will keep all your kids together..such that when you want to transition them into your own program you can. However, you will more than likely want to transition a travel team out first and have us develop your rec kids for a longer period if not indefinitely. We believe that working together…we can offer our kids the best.

7 What We Need From You Post our flyer, e-mail to residents.. Directing them to our web site www.eteamz.com/mavlax All towns must contribute coaches Large town participants must contribute one or more fields (3/1 thru 6/16)

8 Problems Starting a Program Lacrosse may conflict with agenda of town Sports Foundation Need at least 100 kids to be successful Need to replace coaches annually Those who run the program may move on as their kids get older Hard to serve the kids well if only one level of team (not break out A and B players)

9 Problems Starting a Program If seek to be competitive you need a youth program that starts at K or 2 nd grade You need numbers to be successful to have enough, coaches, players, different skill levels, and to cover costs Note that 50-90% of kids show for Travel Practice You need to be good, as kids will go to play elsewhere

10 Program Structure Girls – 3rd thru 8 th grade. All kids are on the same level team Boys: Travel = our Rec program (“B” Level Players) Select = our Travel Program (“A” Level) K thru 2 nd grade - Travel only with intramural scrimmages 3 rd thru 8 th grade – Travel and Select

11 Travel Program The Travel program is instructional to get the kids to play competitively Most practices end with a scrimmage Travel teams play other towns weekly. Playing time is equal Kids regularly assessed to be moved to Select

12 Recreational Program (cont.) We are highly sensitive to stigma between Rec and Travel. Therefore we refer to our “A” and “B” kids as Select and Travel As time passes we learn how drills need to be different for each.

13 Travel Program (cont.) Games are with towns that are all within 30 minutes travel time. Cost: $25 insurance, $250 program. What is provided: kids generally keep shorts and some years practice jerseys.

14 Select Program Again no stigma to the Travel program. Only difference is skill level, and paying $25 to $50 more (cover tournaments) In perfect world we would have as many Select teams as we have towns participating in our program...as we do not want to limit the growth of the sport.

15 Select Program (cont.) Over time towns will need to decide if they want to convert their kids in our program over to their own Sports Foundation.

16 Selection on Select Try-out with 5-10 coaches. Bubble kids are judged independently of Team coaches. Travel kids re-assessed during season to be moved to Select.

17 Footnote to Girls Program Nationally girls Lacrosse is growing faster than the boys. We unfortunately are not mirroring this. We believe this is due to limited private girls’ schools in the area, and there being less coaches with playing experience (unlike Rumson). Given lower expected attendance the Girl’s Rec program may be slower to develop We subsidize the girls program from funds from the boys program to force this program growth/development

18 Coaches All travel head coaches have prior playing and or coaching experience Assistant coaches are currently being groomed to be head coaches. The Travel program is used to develop them. Outside groups are brought in for additional coaching training

19 Coaches (cont.) All coaches are finger printed and Rutgers Safety certified. All towns that contribute kids need to contribute coaches and begin to work on obtaining fields.
