Smart grid & Dynamic Demand The Centre for Carbon Measurement reduces uncertainties in climate data, provides the robust measurement that is required to account for, price and trade carbon emissions and helps develop and accelerate the take up of low carbon technologies. Localised Energy Systems: Challenges and Opportunities, 27 th March 2014

Going smart…

Smart grid measurement tools Better PQ Diagnostics Reduced Faults Grid Planning Grid stability: Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) “Life support monitors” of Smart Grids Synchronized by GPS used to monitor grid stability Fewer Blackouts Stability Control Power quality: How do PQ disturbances propagate through networks ? Develop a PQ disturbance location method Active network management: Sensor Networks Sensors everywhere? – cost, maintenance and “drown” in data Optimised sensor placement

Dynamic Demand Challenge Prize Create a new product, technology or service that utilises data to significantly improve the ability of households or small businesses to demonstrate measurable reduction in carbon emissions by shifting energy demand to off peak times or towards excess renewable generation. Expected outcomes: Demonstrable shift in peak usage to off peak times Measureable reduction in CO 2 emissions Responsiveness to dynamics of supply of renewable energy

Dynamic Demand Challenge Prize Winner event Why? Five finalists have spent the last 8 months developing their innovation Award £50,000 to the finalist who has achieved the most impact in shifting demand to off peak times and that has the most potential for sustainability and scale! Where? Science Museum, London When? Thursday 26th June, 17:30-20:00

Centre for Carbon Measurement Climate data Provide confidence and reduce uncertainties in climate data used for monitoring and modelling Carbon markets & accounting Support tax, trade and regulatory instruments for carbon pricing and reporting Low carbon technologies Accelerate development and assess performance of low carbon technologies Thank you!
