5 Chapter 15: East Asia under Challenge
I. The Decline of the Qing Dynasty As the Qing Dynasty in China fell apart, it opened the door for European advances Mounting Pressure Russia, Japan, Great Britain and France all struggled to control parts of China. Mainland China was mainly controlled by warlords in the late 1800s. Warlords made deals with European nations in exchange for money.

6 Warlords granted European powers exclusive trading privileges over parts of China.
Spheres of Influence = areas where imperial powers are granted exclusive trading rights By late 1800s, Britain, France, Russia, Germany and Japan all had spheres of influence in China When Chinese rioters killed 2 German missionaries, Germany demanded more land. Other European countries got jealous and also demanded more land. Responses to Imperialism US Secretary of State, John Hay, was worried that the Chinese gov’t would collapse under pressure from other countries Wrote a note to the imperial powers asking them to respect the trading rights of other countries, and not to set high tariffs on goods Countries agreed, and Hay said that China had an Open Door Policy.

7 Opening the Door to China US wanted Open Door for two reasons:
Wanted to trade in an open market Wanted China to avoid collapse Reduced imperialist hysteria The Boxer Rebellion Boxers were a group of Chinese who hated foreign influence in China Especially hated and targeted Christian missionaries and Christian converts Foreign countries enraged at deaths of Christian missionaries assembled an allied army to restore order in China Result of Boxer Rebellion = Chinese had to pay an indemnity (payment for damages) to the imperial army, and gave more land away. Epic FAIL.

8 Exit ticket(because I know how much you hate making questions) – explain the similarities between the Sepoy Mutiny and the Boxer Rebellion. You should list at least 2 similarities (think causes and effects), this will be a 5 point grade.
