5 Concept: Data as a “Language” Data: “written word” to translate – Merriam-Webster definition: “Facts or information used usually to calculate, analyze, or plan something” Statistics: tool used to turn data into something we can understand – Merriam-Webster definition: “A branch of mathematics dealing with the collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of masses of data.”

9 Data & Public Health Statistical terminology is both vague and specific. It is difficult to get good resources Because the teaching of statistics is comparatively recent, there is little developed teaching knowledge Technology is forever advancing, requiring regular updating of materials and teaching approaches. Subject of data/statistics is often met with apprehension

10 Data & Public Health Immediately applicable to life, and links in with interesting and diverse contexts. Studying statistics enables class discussion and debate. Statistics is necessary and does good. The study of data and chance can change the way people see the world. Technological advances have put the power for real statistical analysis into the hands of students. Because the teaching of statistics is new, individuals can make a difference in the way statistics is viewed and taught. However, data/statistics is important and can be fun if approached with the right mindset
