2 Translating policy, transforming practice Tracy Lindsay & Jenny Oates

3 Overall aim of this workshop To help participants explore and develop innovative approaches to translating policy into effective clinical practice. To share learning that has arisen from the presenters’ experiences of developing educational activities to enhance mental health practice.

4 Learning outcomes To identify ways to develop clinical practice in the light of recent policy guidance To explore how experiential learning, using real life and case study examples may help practitioners develop knowledge, confidence and skills. To identify gaps in knowledge and practice in their own work environment and explored approaches that might be employed to translate policy into practice.

5 Background Nurse lecturers at City University work in partnership with our local inner London NHS Mental Health Foundation Trust to ensure that mental health practice meets the demands of recent policy developments, through a series of workshops and workbooks, on the following topics: Risk assessment and management Physical health The Care Programme Approach

6 The Care Programme Approach: background and context Refocusing the Care Programme Approach (DH: 2008) Care co-ordinator competencies Target group: All care co-ordinators, from every discipline

7 The Care Programme Approach: topics covered A recovery model approach The role of the care co-ordinator Needs assessment CPA review meetings Interprofessional and interagency working

8 The Care Programme Approach: learning activities You are the expert here – this is time to reflect and share rather than be told how to do your job Applying all policy and practice ideas to a current case you work with Feedback from a service user about reviews Small group opportunities to network and share practice ideas

9 Risk assessment: background Mandatory risk assessment for all qualified clinical staff National confidential Inquiries Best Practice in Managing Risk Target group: All qualified clinical staff in the Trust

12 Supporting the physical health needs of people with mental illness: background and context Overwhelming evidence of physical health needs of this population National, local guidance & Trust policy Target group: All Registered Mental Health Nurses

13 Supporting the physical health needs of people with mental illness: topics covered Assessment, management and treatment of: Cardiovascular disease Respiratory disease Diabetes Metabolic syndrome Health promotion Physical assessment skills Medication management

14 Supporting the physical health needs of people with mental illness: learning activities Traditional sitting and taking notes and listening Case studies Quizzes Small group work Discussion groups & reflection Clinical skills practice – back to temp / BP / pulse / respiratory observations

15 Key points Use workbooks to give detail and reference beyond the workshops Invite clinicians to link policy developments with existing practice Use realistic case study examples Give clinicians the opportunity to work alone, in small groups and as a whole group throughout the study days. Consider how to follow up the workshops in practice
