12 Biography Jane Goodall has always loved animals. In her mid-20s, she travelled to Africa to work with a famous archaeologist called Louis Leakey. She was given the task of observing and studying the behaviour of a population of chimpanzees in Tanzania. Jane discovered that chimps had far more in common with humans than anyone had ever realised. They had individual personalities, expressed emotions and even made primitive tools. Jane continued to study the chimps for over 40 years and became famous throughout the world. Today, Jane dedicates her life to educating people about animal rights and conservation of the environment. She spends around 300 days each year travelling and lecturing all over the world to inspire hope for a brighter future. She says, “Every single day we make an impact on the world and we all have a choice as to what sort of impact we’re going to make.” (From a lecture in May 2006.)
