What is a linear equation? A linear equation is an algebraic equation where the goal is to get the variable by itself, and then solve for that variable. This is how you solve them:

PEMDAS To solve linear equations, you use PEMDAS, or the order of operations, to find the correct answer.

Parentheses The first step to solving linear equations is to solve anything enclosed in parentheses. Example: ( 9 + 4 ) + 5 = 2x 13 + 5 = 2x 18 = 2x x = 9

Exponents The second step in solving linear equations is to solve any number has an exponent, or a number times itself a certain amount. Example: ( 3 + 7 ) 2² = 4x ( 3 + 7 ) 2² = 4x ( 10 ) 2² = 4x ( 10 ) 4 = 4x 40 = 4x x = 10

Multiplication / Division The next step in solving linear equations is to solve multiplication and division. If it applies, you solve anything in parentheses first, then any exponents, and then any multiplication and division reading left to right. Which means, which ever comes first, you solve first. Example: 3² ( 2 + 2 ) 3 ÷ 2 = 9x 3² ( 4 ) 3 ÷ 2 = 9x 9 ( 4 ) 3 ÷ 2 = 9x 36 3 ÷ 2 = 9x 108 ÷ 2 = 9x 54 = 9x x = 6

Addition / Subtraction The final step in solving linear equations is to add and subtract. If it applies, use all steps from PEMDAS in order first, and then add and subtract reading left to right. Example: ( 4 3 + 3 ) + 4² - 10 = 11x 16 + 4² - 10 = 11x 16 + 16 - 10 = 11x 32 - 10 = 11x 22 = 11x x = 2

One Last Example! 4 + 5 + ( 9 11 + 18 ) ÷ 3² + 2x = 36 - 6 + 2x 4 + 5 + 117 ÷ 3² + 7x = 36 - 6 + 2x 4 + 5 + 117 ÷ 9 + 7x = 36 - 6 + 2x 4 + 3 + 13 + 7x = 36 - 6 + 2x 20 + 7x = 36 - 6 + 2x 20 + 7x = 30 + 2x 7x = 10 + 2x 5x = 10 x = 2 1.) add parentheses 2.) solve exponents 3.) divide 117 ÷ 9 4.) add 4 + 3 + 13 5.) subtract 36 – 6 6.) subtract 20 from each side 7.) subtract 2x from each side 8.) divide each side by 5
