2 Discontent Among the Colonists Complain about trustee rules Land – Upset could not sell or lease land – Poor soil to grow crops – Women could not inherit land

3 Slaves Trustees banned slavery so colonists would work own land Farmers grew rice and indigo Crops were labor intensive South Carolina rice planters became rich having slaves

4 Rum was cheap and readily available in the colonies Item of trade between colonists & Native Americans Officials could not enforce the law Rum

5 Problems Georgia’s climate & soil were not suited for silk, wine,& indigo Colonist believed that GA would never grow unless people could buy land, sell land, and use slaves in fields Trustees called unhappy colonists “Malcontents”

9 So… What happens? The colonist win – Slavery is now legal – Land can be bought and sold – Liquor can be bought and sold Surrender the colony to the British Government, it will not we a royal colony.

10 Returned Georgia colony to King of England in 1752 One year before 21 year Charter expired Consisted of a governor, council & legislature 12 men on council advised the governor Becoming a Royal Colony

11 Prospering Farmers are growing indigo, corn, peas, wheat, rye, tobacco, rice. Slavery is a HUGE part of economy. Colonist sell lumber, raise cattle, mules, horses, and hogs. They trade these things for fur from the Indians. Colonist begin exporting their products to other countries.

12 John Reynolds 1 st Governor of Georgia. Helped set up court system, bicameral legislature. Colony was poor Former Naval Officer Disliked by colonist Had so many issues with the Colonist that the King removed him from office

13 Henry Ellis 2 nd Governor of Georgia. Restored the colony Reformed the government Helped the creek Indians He helped to show the colonist how to govern themselves. Was liked and respected by colonist.

14 James Wright Last royal Governor of Georgia. Negotiated important treaties with the Indians helped Georgia to grow and prosper. Was very popular with colonist. Governor until the American Revolution Longest serving Governor
