Rousseau did not begin to paint until he was 40 years old. Apes in the Orange Grove, 1910

Rousseau was known as a Primitive artist because he was not taught in any art school.

Many other artists and critics were unkind about his works and he was not recognized as a great artist until late in his life.

Because he spent so much time on each painting, he did not make a lot of them.

Rousseau became famous for his jungle paintings, but he never saw a jungle. He never even left France. He got his ideas from pictures and drawings in books.
