Ephesians 2:1–3 1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.

Colossians 3:1–4 1 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Colossians 3:5 5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry... Seven Deadly Sins Pride, Greed, Envy, Lust, Gluttony, Wrath, Sloth…

Understanding Gluttony Gluttony is excess consumption. Gluttony is easy to see. Gluttony is easy to excuse. Gluttony is not a food problem. Gluttony is a worship problem. Philippians 3:19 Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things.

Gluttony (Consumption Idolatry) Consumption for pleasure. Consumption for comfort. In either case the worshiper looks to a substance to provide only what Jesus is meant to provide.

Gluttony is “to die for.” 2 Peter 2:19 They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved.

Edmond’s Turkish Delight “… anyone who had once tasted it would want more and more of it, and would even, if they were allowed, go on eating it till they killed themselves.” Its to die for… means its addictive.

Addictive Cycle of Gluttony (Food, Alcohol, Drugs, ______ ) I consume to feel pleasure/relieve pain. Pleasure /relief is short lived. I consume more to feel pleasure… I depend on consumption to feel pleasure/comfort… What I consume brings unintended pain. I consume to relieve the pain brought on by the consumption.

Gospel Hope Victory won’t come from self control. Victory wont come from asking God to take away your desire. Victory comes from cultivating desire that fulfills. John 4 Living Water

John 6:35–38 35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. 36 But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. 37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. 38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.
