It is often more economical to prevent diseases than to treat them. This presentation reviews good prevention practices discussed in previous lessons and introduces the use of vaccinations in prevention. 3 Steps Involved with filling a Syringe
Step 1 Remove the clear plastic end cap from the base of one needle and slip the needle onto the syringe. Key Point to Remember: This prepares the needle and syringe for use.

4 Steps Involved with filling a Syringe
Step 2 Remove the cap from the needle and draw 2 cc of air into the syringe by pulling the plunger back. Key Point to Remember: Drawing air into the syringe will replace the fluid you remove from the vial.

5 Steps Involved with filling a Syringe
Step 3 Hold Medicine Vial 1 upside down, insert the needle in Medicine Vial 1 and push the air into the vial. Key Point to Remember: By inverting the vial, you allow gravity to work for you rather than against you.

6 Steps Involved with filling a Syringe
Step 4 Maintain the inverted position of Medicine Vial 1, draw back on the plunger, pulling 2 cc of liquid into the syringe. Key Point to Remember: The air you have pushed into the vial and gravity will allow the fluid to be removed more easily.

7 Steps Involved with filling a Syringe
Step 5 Remove the needle from the medicine vial, hold the syringe vertical with the needle pointed up, and tap the side of the syringe lightly. Press the plunger gently to release the trapped air until a very small amount of medicine trickles out. Key Point to Remember: This releases the air trapped in the syringe.

8 Steps Involved with filling a Syringe
Step 6 Replace the cap on the needle and remove the needle from the syringe. Key Point to Remember This needle will be used only for drawing medicine from the vials.
