2 Objectives: 1. To describe Spanish exploration of the Americas and its effects on Native Americans, Africans, and Europeans. 2. To describe the pattern of conquest that the Spanish used to subdue Native American peoples. 3. To summarize the goals of Spanish explorers and settlers who pushed into what is now the United States and to understand why Native Americans resisted.

3 Standard- 11.1 Students analyze the significant events in the founding of the nation and its attempts to realize the philosophy of government described in the Declaration of Independence. Objective: Summarize the historical background of the Declaration of Independence and ideological origins of the American Revolution

Christopher Columbus- sails west from Spain across Atlantic to find shorter trading route to Asia Oct.12, 1492- Columbus’ ships find land *Columbus felt he had landed in India (called local natives Indians)

9 Two worlds Collide- Columbus’ discovery changes the world Effect on Native Americans 1.Forced into slavery by Spanish 2.Disease decimates population- no resistance to simple sicknesses (flu, measles, chickenpox) 3.Culture destroyed- Spanish force Indians to convert to Christianity or stop practicing native religions

10 Impact on Europe 1.Wealth- Spain claimed new land (Mexico to Chile) and took Gold from new colonies 2.Columbian Exchange- foods from Americas (potatoes, tobacco, corn) become popular in Europe 3.Migration- Europeans began moving to new world for better life

14 Spain Claims a New Empire (1500s)- Spain was the first European country to colonize and explore Americas, controlled land from Mexico to tip of South America Conquistadors- Spanish explorers who claimed land for Spain with help of superior weapons, Native Americans allies, and spreading disease – Hernan Cortes- conquers Mexico and Aztecs with 600 men, 17 horses, and 10 cannons » *Spain’s control of Mexico made Spain wealthy and the strongest country in Europe

15 What’s happening in the US? Spain explores US southwest (CA. AZ., TX.FL.) but finds little gold *Spain focuses on converting Indians to Christianity Missions- plantations designed to convert Indians while making a profit off Indian labor *Helps destroy Native American culture and leads tribes to rebel

16 Missions… Pueblo and Pope- lead 17000 Indians in 1680 against Spanish in New Mexico that kicked Spanish out for 14 years – **Lack of wealth and Indian rebellions helped shift Spain’s attention away from North America allowing other European countries to set up colonies in the present day US
