Le tremblement de terre Up to one-third of the population of Haiti has been affected by the January 12 earthquake, the worst seen in the country for 200 years. The epicentre was at Carrefour, a city just 10 miles away from the capital (and Haiti’s biggest city) Port-au-Prince. Both the hills and coastal areas of Port-au-Prince were badly impacted. Thousands of homes, roads, hospitals and government offices – including the Presidential Palace and UN headquarters - have been damaged or destroyed, which is making the recovery and rescue effort more difficult to coordinate. The damage in terms of cost is expected to run into the billions, a cost that Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere, simply cannot afford.
