The Golden Rule: Write a paper you would like to read.

Preparing your paper Who is your audience? What type of paper do you want to give (details or more general/ lots on intro or not?) What are your goals? What are the main points? A plan

Preparing your paper Who is your audience? What type of paper do you want to give (details or more general/ lots on intro or not?) Physics 164 Class they know some nuclear physics They know nothing about calorimeters dark matter space borne experiments etc Give a good introduction and be general but specific enough to give some details

Preparing your paper Form a thesis? (PUNCH LINE) Supersymmetry may be a road to unification

Preparing your paper What are the main points? Work hard on these main point you are trying to get across – remember people cannot absorb more than about 3-5 points these should be some of points in the outline

? The outline sets up the organization for you! Preparing your paper A plan abstract references

EXPLAIN ALL VARIABLES sections that explain what is the point of the story in the subsection. Identify the bottom line points and/or illustrations. Give information to support the story

Organization Start with an abstract which gives in a few statements Introduction Body of paper main point 1 main point 2 main point 3 Summary and conclusion references

Outline or overview

Introduce your subject (5 slides) Give the basics ideas physics Variables history if need be

Now cover each of your points Intro detail Intro detail Intro detail

Concluding Your ending slides should do 2 things Summarize reiterate the goal “punch line”

Some General points I recommend no more than 20 slides plan for a 20 min talk (longer talks – easier) A picture is worth 1000 words Label ALL PLOTS CLEARLY EXPLAIN ALL VARIABLES Use primary colors STRIVE FOR CLARITY ABOVE ALL ELSE
