1 How to Cook Rice  Rice can be cooked on stove, in microwave or oven  Rice other than white (brown, wild) takes twice the amount of time to cook  Regardless of which method, always add 1 tsp. salt to water per 1 cup rice

2 How to Cook Rice METHOD 1: Pasta method – Place 1 cup rice and 1 tsp salt in rapidly boiling water (refer to pasta notes) – Boil uncovered, check after 12 minutes – When tender, drain in colander, return to pan, stir in additional ingredients – No more scorched rice/pan!

3 How to Cook Rice  Method 2 Traditional(the old fashioned way)  Bring twice the amount of water (for example: 1 cup rice, 2 cups water) to a simmer (covered, high heat).  Add 1 cup rice, 1 tsp. salt, stir, cover.  Simmer (watch out for boiling over!) until all water is absorbed about 18-20 minutes.  Fluff with fork, stir in additional ingredients.  This method is great for using milk for a sweet rice

4 Rice Experiment  Kitchens Green, Yellow, Black will make Method 2  Kitchens Blue, Red, White will make Method 1  Each Kitchen will bring 2 T of rice in a soup bowl to ingredient cart.  Label a piece of paper towel with Kitchen # and type of rice, place this under bowl on a tray.

5 Let’s eat!  With remaining rice, add:  2 T butter  2 T brown sugar OR 2 T Parmesan cheese. Enjoy!

6 Rice Analysis  Answer these questions during lab:  Time to cook  Scorched pot?  Boiled over?  Pot watching?  Amount of water?  Pot vs. sauce pan?  Covered vs. uncovered?  Kernels separate or sticky?
