2 2 Motivation The Proxy Mobile IPv6 protocol [RFC-5213] does not expose the group affiliation of a mobile node in the mobility messages. What is a group affiliation ? It essentially is a group of mobile node which have certain common characteristics. Example: In a blade architecture system, all the mobile nodes that have anchored sessions on a given line card can be identified by a common group identifier. Why is it needed ? It allows the mobility entities to perform protocol operations on a set of mobile nodes via a single transaction as supposed to a series of messages. Example: Bulk Re-Registration or Bulk De-Registration. Preserves this important attribute of a mobile node and allows it in the use of mobility control messages.

4 IETF 75: NETEXT Working Group – Group Identifier Option for Proxy Mobile IPv6 4 Other Considerations The LMA may choose to dynamically assign the mobile node to a specific group and return its group affiliation in the Proxy Binding Acknowledgement messages. The MAG can potentially use this group identity in the subsequent messages for performing any group operations. Group-Id-1(MN1, MN2, MN5, MN6) Group-Id-2(MN3, MN4, MN7, MN8) Multiple instances of the MN Group Identifier can be present, one for each sub-type. Need to split the sub-type name space for LMA and MAG allocation scope.
