20070881.ppt16 What is Culture? Case Study #1 The Gutierrez family lives in a small, rural town in Mexico. Grandmother, grandfather, mother, father, 4 children, along with 2 of their cousins, live in a humble home…not to mention their 3 dogs, 2 chickens and a goat. The Gutierrez family has carried on the tradition of their family for generations of weaving tapestries. The children learn to weave from a very early age, and must come home to weave right after school. continued

20070881.ppt17 What is Culture? Case Study #1 Making a living selling tapestries in this small town is being more and more difficult. Mr. Gutierrez has a cousin who lives in Washington in the United States. His cousins family has been there for over 10 years picking apples and seems to be doing quite well. So as the person in charge of his familys welfare, Mr. Gutierrez makes the decision to move his family to the state of Washington. continued

20070881.ppt18 What is Culture? Case Study #1 With so many people to transport in the family van there is little room for personal belongings and only the most important treasures are taken with them…a painting of the Virgin Mary, for example, and grandmothers silver tea set that had belonged to her grandmother. After a long journey, the Gutierrez family arrives in Washington State at their cousins front door.

20070881.ppt19 What is Culture? Case Study #2 Its March, and another school year is almost over. Mrs. Hardgraves already has 26 children in her 1st grade class and just received a new student today. Ivans family is originally from Bosnia. When Ivan was 4, it was necessary for them to seek political refuge outside of their country. Ivan just arrived with his family yesterday from Germany, where they lived for a short 14 months. continued

20070881.ppt20 What is Culture? Case Study #2 Ivan joins a beautiful group of students that represent various parts of the globe…two cousins in the class are from Vietnam; one boy is from the Sudan; 11 children are Spanish-speaking from various parts of the North, Central and South America; 1 child is from Samoa; and another is from Pakistan. continued

20070881.ppt21 What is Culture? Case Study #2 The rest of the children also represent a diverse group of second or third generation immigrants or refuges, families who have been in the neighborhood for generations, and some families who seem to be constantly on the move from one neighborhood to the next, looking for some sort of stability that never seems to find them. continued

20070881.ppt22 What is Culture? Case Study #2 Mrs. Hardgraves class is continuously changing throughout the year. Only 13 of the 27 children she now has were with her since the beginning of the school year and it is quite probable that in the next two and ½ months of school she will say good bye to 3 or 4 students and welcome in another 3 or 4.
