Stereotyping

A generalisation about a group to which we attribute a defined set of characteristics based on limited knowledge. Often about groups we have never met (Asylum Seekers) Examples: Asians in the Simpsons, The Role of the mother

Stereotyping is about labelling groups as if they are all the same: Girls are more academic, all Asians own convenience stores, policemen are lazy etc. Mostly negative although not intentional. Done for ease of explanation in conversations.

Katz and Braly (1933) Conducted a study amongst white Americans. They easily categories certain ethnic minorities into the following stereotypes: Jews were shrewd Whites: Hard working and intelligent Afro- Caribbean's: lazy

Advantage: Respond to situations that are similar to ones we have faced before, example being warring of a gang at night when you are alone. Disadvantage: Unfair to generalise. Should treat all individuals as unique.

Disadvantages: Transform assumptions of particular groups into “realities” Used to justify position of those in power Perpetuate inequalities and discrimination

Our stereotypes can change only once we are convinced of new evidence to the contrary.
