Frankie’s Periodic Challenge E14-19

Hello Everyone! Mrs. Bhattacharyya told me that you are preparing for your periodic table quiz and I asked if I could help out. Mrs. Bhattacharyya will give you an answer sheet to my challenge. This is where you will record your answers to the following review questions. Each time you answer you will wager some of your points depending on how sure you are of your answer. Never wager all of your points unless you are POSITIVE about an answer. If you are right, you win the points you wagered. If you are wrong, you must subtract that number from your points. Please ask Mrs. Bhattacharyya if you have any questions.

Yikes! The periodic table is huge! We have a lot to cover. Let’s get started! Question 1: Does the current periodic table arrange elements according to their atomic number or atomic mass? ** Write your answer, then write the number of points you are willing to wager on this question

Answer #1: Atomic number *If you were correct, add the number of points you wagered to your balance (100pts) *If you were incorrect, subtract the number of points you wagered from your balance

Nice job! Mendeleev’s original table was arranged by mass, but now we use atomic number. Question 2: Look at the information for Nobelium below. How many protons are found in an atom of Nobelium?

Answer #2: 102 *If you were correct, add the number of points you wagered to your balance *If you were incorrect, subtract the number of points you wagered from your balance

The number of protons always equals the atomic number. Use the same information to figure out the next one. Question 3: How many neutrons are in an atom of Nobelium?

Answer #3: 157 *If you were correct, add the number of points you wagered to your balance *If you were incorrect, subtract the number of points you wagered from your balance

Check out this picture of me as a puppy! I was so much lighter than I am now. Question 4: What is the lightest element on the periodic table?

Answer # 4: hydrogen *If you were correct, add the number of points you wagered to your balance *If you were incorrect, subtract the number of points you wagered from your balance

Question 5: What is the most reactive family on the periodic table? What column are they in? (must have both right)

Answer # 5: The alkali metals, group 1 *If you were correct, add the number of points you wagered to your balance MUST HAVE BOTH RIGHT FOR CREDIT *If you were incorrect, subtract the number of points you wagered from your balance

Question 6: What is the most stable (unreactive) family on the periodic table? What column are they in?

Answer #6: The noble gases, group 18 *If you were correct, add the number of points you wagered to your balance YOU MUST HAVE BOTH RIGHT!!! *If you were incorrect, subtract the number of points you wagered from your balance

Answer #7: Groups, 18 *If you were correct, add the number of points you wagered to your balance MUST GET BOTH RIGHT *If you were incorrect, subtract the number of points you wagered from your balance

Now you should definitely get this one right! Question 8: What are HORIZONTAL ROWS called? How many are there? You must get both right for credit.

Answer #8: Periods, 7 *If you were correct, add the number of points you wagered to your balance YOU MUST HAVE BOTH RIGHT *If you were incorrect, subtract the number of points you wagered from your balance

Answer #9: The number of electron shells it has ex: three electrons shells *If you were correct, add the number of points you wagered to your balance *If you were incorrect, subtract the number of points you wagered from your balance

Other than periods and groups the periodic table is separated in many ways. Question 10: What separates metals from non metals?

Answer #10: the zigzag line *If you were correct, add the number of points you wagered to your balance *If you were incorrect, subtract the number of points you wagered from your balance

Question 11: Which side of the zigzag line are metals on?

Answer #11: the left *If you were correct, add the number of points you wagered to your balance *If you were incorrect, subtract the number of points you wagered from your balance

This is my human, Mrs. Bhattacharyya. She told me all about the human that created the first periodic table. Question 12 What was his name?

Answer #12: Dmitri Mendeleev *If you were correct, add the number of points you wagered to your balance DON’T WORRY ABOUT SPELLING *If you were incorrect, subtract the number of points you wagered from your balance

Yawn! I need a nap. Hopefully this review has helped you decide what things you should spend extra time studying tonight. Make sure you look over the study guide packet. You should also look on the website. There are many periodic table review websites as well as the this PowerPoint.

Compare your total scores. Who has the highest number of points? Happy Studying!
