5 Assessment Your child is assessed in a variety of ways First, information is gathered about your child’s needs as a reader and writer Next, instructions are delivered based on these needs Then, a grade is assigned based on observations, conferences, work samples, portfolios The grade reflects how well a child achieved specific expectation as outlined in the Ontario Curriculum document Level 2 –approaching provincial standard Level 3 – Provincial standard Level 4 – beyond provincial standard

6 Student Portfolio Portfolios – Only best work is proudly taken home! Loose sheets, evaluated Math units and Art projects are kept Notebooks, duo-tangs and rubrics signed and returned the next day Only final, independently completed pieces are given a grade Rubrics are used to determine a level of achievement Practice pieces are not assessed

8 Homework Word Their Way Information is gathered using Spelling Inventory Your child receives instructions based on their specific need The program consists of picture and word sorts and word games It allows the speller to discover spelling patterns This is based on research which shows that certain spelling errors occur together Let’s try this! Sort the word card under these headings: - oi -oy What spelling patterns do you notice?

10 Helping your child to become a better reader – things to consider Look at the cover Do a picture walk Think what you already know about the topic Predict the story line Anticipate vocabulary Make connections Retell the story Ask “thick” questions: What is the author trying to tells us What is the author not telling us Who is the target audience How might other people (of other ethnic background, gender, age) interpret the story Whose voice is being heard Whose voice is not heard

11 Helping your child to decode a word Word decoding strategies Use picture clue Look at the first letter, what sound does it make Slide over the sounds, or put them together fast Look at the vowel combination: ee, ae, ai, Look it’s a blend or a diagraph: bl, br, fl, ch, sh, What rhymes with best Read on and come back; what do you think makes sense How do we say it in English Fluency – “Reading should sound like talking”

12 Sacraments Sacraments are celebrated as a school Registration forms are distributed by the school and returned completed along with the Baptismal Certificate to the parish at the parent meeting Parent Meeting – Tuesday, October 16 at 7:30 p.m. Reconciliation – Saturday, February 23 at 11:00 a.m. Parent Meeting – Tuesday, March 5 at 7:30 p.m. Church Visit – Tuesday, April 12 at 1:00 p.m. First Communion – Sunday, April 28 at 2:00 p.m.
