1 An Introduction to Mathematics-related Subjects in S6 Curriculum March 2007

2 S6 Curriculum Pure Mathematics (A Level) Mathematics & Statistics (AS Level)

3 Pure Mathematics Pre-requisite – Additional Mathematics (Highly preferable) – Additional Mathematics related to Pure Mathematics in Point II system

4 Pure Mathematics  Nature of Subject  Require good foundation in Mathematics Concepts rather than solely on mechanical skills and operations.  Require Abstract Thinking.  Making Proofs rather than Computation

5 Pure Mathematics Topics –Most topics are related to that in Additional Mathematics but focus on the concepts rather than computational skills. –Algebra (Polynomials, Equations, …..) –Calculus (Differentiation, Integration) –Coordinate Geometry (2 D Coordinate Geometry) –New Topics –Algebra (Set, Functions, Linear Algebra) –Calculus (Continuity, Polar Coordinates) –Complex Number –Conic Sections

6 Pure Mathematics Impact of New Syllabus – Bridging of Integration skills is necessary – Complex number is a brand new topic for students

7 Pure Mathematics Prospects – Compulsory Subjects for Minimum Requirements in certain disciplines in Universities : Engineering Computer-Science Pure Science (Mathematics, Physics)

8 Mathematics & Statistics AS Level Preparing for disciplines in Social Sciences or some in Pure Science (e.g. Statistics)

9 Mathematics & Statistics Can’t be chosen with other Mathematics Subjects simultaneously. Both Science and Arts streams students can take. For Arts stream students, Grade C or above in Mathematics.

10 Mathematics & Statistics Topics: – Mathematics (Basic Skills on Advanced Mathematics – some topics in Add. Maths such as differentiation and integration) – Statistics

11 Mathematics & Statistics Usually Not a compulsory subjects for Admission to Universities (May be replaced by Pure Mathematics) For Some Social Science disciplines, M&S is more preferable compared to other AS Level Subjects

12 Mathematics & Statistics Do you want to study Social science subjects? – Psychology, Sociology, Economics,… – Visit: http://www.hku.hk or http://www.cuhk.edu.hkhttp://www.hku.hkhttp://www.cuhk.edu.hk Are you capable? – About 40% content is covered in Add. Maths syllabus
