8 The Role of the US Creation & defense of Israel Foreign aid ($3b/yr)
Buy US goods/services Military assistance Strategic ally “Double bind” Tension Creation of nation of Israel & defense of Israel in all war activities Always at top recipients of foreign aid. Was once economic aid (ended in 2007 b/c strong economy of their own). Now focuses on military aid (defense equipment, services, and training). Strategic Ally- They are a pro-Western island in a sea of anti-Western nations. Improve their defense capabilities & foster close relationship. But we disapprove of several things (nuclear program – which they say they don’t have but we may have played a role in developing; settlement activity in occupied territories; other issues related to peace talks with Palestinian Authority) Tension – Was bipartisan support for Israel, but Republican party and Netanyahu critical of Obama’s “extended hand” efforts to improve America’s relationship with larger Middle East.

10 Example 1948 War When Israel declared its independence in May 1948, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon declared war. Israel defeated the combined Arab armies and enlarged its territory.
