7 Economics People Corporate Social Environment Responsibility (CSR)
Sustainability Economics CSR - Being a good employer and neighbour Basing assessments on GRI indicators. (Inc sector supplements for charities) H&S - H&S team Diversity & Equal – OD team Discrimination - OD team Employment – OD team & People department. Investments – How ethical are our investments? (We do have some sust’ criteria but how robust) Often perception that either or whereas in fact many ethical / responsible investments doing as well if not better than most of the marketplace. - Transparent financial reporting Environment – Making sure we don’t pollute, we use resources wisely and comply with the law. I will go into the environment in more detail in a minute.

8 Rescuing Now Lifesaving Indefinitely
For me personally this is what true sustainability for the RNLI is all about. It is “Future Proofing” the organisation to ensure we can keep doing what we do indefinitely and to show people we make best use of the time, resources and funding they give us.

9 Purpose For the RNLI to be recognised as a charity that has fully integrated sustainable thinking and ways of working into our core business, with measureable improvements being made against all of our sustainability indicators. This is what is proposed as the purpose of sustainability at the RNLI Currently awaiting approval from management & trustees of Sustainability indicators and measures we will be using. Once these are agreed I will be having discussions with the management teams to work out together and agree what improvements we can realistically achieve.

10 To create more value than we take
Vision To create more value than we take This is the proposed vision and again it is awaiting approval. This basically means that rather than aiming to be a bit less bad we aim to be a real force for good. This is a long term vision i.e. over the next 20 years or so, however other enlightened organisations are also aiming for this so we are not alone. Aiming for Net Positive

11 Environmental Management
ISO 14001 Environmental Management standard We were re certified to ISO in July 2013 However my review has shown that real progress has stalled.

12 Environment Energy Transport Waste Water Materials use
Legal compliance Energy – Electricity & Gas – Two providers Inenco and Energia. Big and dispersed estate. Refining system for measurement and monitoring. Converting to Carbon and reporting qrtly to ET Energy renewables - £100K saved in last 12 months Transport – Cars, vans/trucks/lorries, RWC, inflatables. Reviewing our fuel card provider and reporting data. Flights and ferrys. Will form part of our footprint and qtrly report. Waste – Not currently collecting and collating waste data accurately. Big piece of work next 6 to 12 months. Diverse loactions with different types of waste. Kit, paper, food, oils, fluids to do with boats and vehicles. Water – in and out, controlled water and pollution prevention. Backwash from training pool. Materials use – paper, batteries, fuels, equipment Legal compliance – Pollution prevention, water, contaminated land, air pollutants etc.

13 This is our current EMS toolbox which is broken down into different functions
This was developed by my predecessor but will be changing to a different operating system soon.

14 This was developed by my predecessor but will be changing to a different operating system soon.

15 The future Short term - Setting up measurement and monitoring for energy waste, water and agreeing targets /objectives with managers. Also ensuring we are legally compliant and that each function knows what they need to do and where to get the right information. Getting good ideas from RNLI people on what we could / should be doing environmentally Medium term – Improving our performance and collecting evidence to demonstrate continuous environmental improvement Longer term – Aim to be carbon neutral and then “Net Positive”?

16 Energy – Site review id £180k Waste – Lifejacket recycling
Future Renewables on going 15 PV installed 140MWh (£100k) 12 Heat pumps so far 1 Wind Turbine Energy – Site review id £180k Waste – Lifejacket recycling Heat pumps Currently 12 commissioned, with 3 or 4 more due for commissioning this year. Wind Turbines Aith is the only turbine, and is currently running well. Dec 2012 – May 2013 generated 11MWh. Earning over £3k, saving a further £1k. Despite having had several months of down time this year. PV Currently 15 installations, totalling 150kWp installed capacity. Dec 2012 – May 2013 generated 60MWh. Earning £22k, saving a further £5.4k. On target for 140MWh this year, which is in line with predictions. The 16th installation (Portsmouth) was completed last week. Next set of readings are due end of this month, which will likely be in the region of £25k of earnings. This next set of readings will take the total benefit (earned and saved) for PV so far to well over £100k.
