4 Overview The impact of the Industrial Revolution and the evolution of technology in the 1800s gave designers the ability to construct buildings to greater heights—more than ever before. The construction of new “skyscrapers’’ would not have been possible without advancements in elevator lift technology. 4 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013. All rights reserved.

5 Theory of Operation of an Elevator Lift System An elevator lift system consists of several components and subsystems that work together to safely transport passengers within a building structure. The elevator car secures passengers for transportation. An electric motor is used to provide power to lift and lower the car. 5 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013. All rights reserved.

6 Theory of Operation of an Elevator Lift System (continued) A cable system connects to the car on one end and to a set of counter weights on the other end— this balances the passenger load. The braking system allows the car to stop between floors and is an important safety feature on all elevators. Computerized control systems prioritize and sequence passenger requests and give passengers the ability to control the operation of each elevator car. 6 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013.
