© 2013 IBM Corporation UKI Industry Solutions Internet of Things Facilitated discussion Jamie Caffrey @jambo13

© 2013 IBM Corporation The Internet of Things (IoT) It’s estimated that there are 9 billion devices connected to the internet today, and there will be between 20 - 50 billion devices will be connected by 2020 (Cisco, Ericsson) 4 billion terabytes of data will be generated this year alone (SAP, Harris Interactive) The shipment of PCs, tablets and mobile phones should total 2.4 billion units this year (Gartner) The business impact of connected devices could be worth $4.5 Trillion (GSMA)

© 2013 IBM Corporation Automation and Control - South Bend, Indiana, USA A town with a population of 130,000 with 600 miles of sewers handling 48 million gallons of waste water. Being regularly fined $600k per year by the EPA for over 30 ‘Combined Sewer Overflows’ Installed 117 sensors from emnet.net, receiving flow data every 5 minutes. Implemented predictive flow analytics from IBM and Notre Dame University. Resulted in only 1 or 2 CSOs per year now. Avoided over $100M in infrastructure investments by utilising existing sewer system more effectively.

© 2013 IBM Corporation The IoT is not just an M2M offering….

© 2013 IBM Corporation Even people are sensors… Sometimes without knowing it…. Blue Tooth Beacons – for measuring road speed and congestion) – bitcarrier.net Anonymous mobile phone signal data – for measuring shopper’s behaviour in shopping centres – pathintelligence.com

© 2013 IBM Corporation Questions Who already has an ‘Internet of Things’ policy in their business? Who recognises some of the patterns / technologies mentioned? Conversely, what are the barriers that have stopped you looking at this? Technology? Connectivity? Making use of the data? What value could be captured from the IoT? Is it hard or easy to ascertain in your organisation?? (a lot of this is sensor based, how do you turn it into ROI?) Is this type of technology most important to you to help drive information and analysis for your business, or would it be of more use for automation and control? Is crowd-sourced data of use for commercial businesses? What about privacy, and data security; would these affect your decision making process? Will this affect your current business models? How will having to rely on ever dynamic data affect your business? Will the influx of new data help you spot where efficiencies could be gained in your business, or will it create a sea of data complexity?

© 2013 IBM Corporation Questions What place does commercial IT have in the IoT vs Open Source. Does anyone plan to use platforms like Cosm or Xively? What barriers are you finding to implementing IoT like projects? How important are standards in this area for you? Do you have plans for a Chief Data Officer, or employee any Data Scientists? As new technologies come online, further connectivity is required; how are your organisation preparing for this, and new standards like IPv6 for instance?
