Effectiveness of different designs of input and out put

Lesson Objective Be able to compare and contrast, using HCI principles, the effectiveness of different designs of input and output. Be able to identify qualitative and quantitative measures of effectiveness. Keywords: Compare, Contrast, Qualitative, Quantitative

Starter Task – 5 min What do you thing the words ‘Contrast’ and ‘Compare’ mean? In pairs discuss the matter and come up with some examples to answer the question.

Contrast & Compare Comparison is used to describe the similarities of two different objects (basically how ‘alike’ they are). Contrast is used to describe the differences between two different objects (essentially how ‘unlike’ they are).

Examples Some compare–contrast examples: Both Microsoft Windows® and Linux have GUIs (comparison). More users are familiar with Microsoft Windows®’ GUI (contrast). QWERTY and Dvorak are both recognisable keyboard types (comparison). Unlike QWERTY keyboards, Dvorak aims to reduce typist fatigue (contrast).

Quantitative & Qualitative Measurement Quantitative: Measurement that involves numbers Qualitative: Measurement is defined in a descriptive manner. Lets learn more about this by turning to page 33 of the HCI handbook.

TASK 1 - 10 MIN In Pairs: Compare & contrast “Windows Media Player” and “Real Player / i- Tunes” Use the qualitative and quantitative measures to make a informed judgement on which has the best HCI.

Task 2 – 10 min In Pairs - brain storm on 3 HCI input and output for the scenario you are working on for the assignment. List the factors that would enable visually impaired people of colour blindness to use a particular computer software. Search the internet to find links of software that cater for such an audience. Make a note of the features that they have incorporated

Task 3 – 15 min Continue with the interface design making sure you implement some of the ideas gathered within Task 2 Make sure you design using Visual Studio.

Task 4 - 15 min Start drafting a comparison between their interface and what software they have found from the internet – Use MS Word

PLENARY 1 Finding similarities is ‘contrast’ or ‘compare’? 2 Finding differences is ‘contrast’ or ‘compare’? 3 Numbers are a form of ………………… measurement. 4 Client needs can be not achieved, fully achieved or ……… achieved. 5 Name three types of comparative costs. 6 Descriptions are a form of …………………………… measurement. 7 Name three measurements of user satisfaction. 8 State two key questions used as part of HCI evaluation.

Keywords Compare, Contrast, Qualitative, and Quantitative
