What was the main purpose of our metric unit? What skills did we learn?

Accurate Measurement! What are real life situations in which it is important to accurately measure? Why does accurately measuring matter?

Applying Measurement Skills As a group, your table is going to make one of two concoctions using your accurate measuring skills.

Concoctions Magic Mud Colloid – The water does not actually dissolve the cornstarch. – The particles are fine and remain in suspension within the water – The water is the continuous phase (liquid that holds the other particles suspended in it) – The cornstarch particles form a dispersed phase (spread throughout liquid) – Other colloids you may know are: milk, gelatin, agar, aerosol spray, smoke and fog. Flubber Polymer – A polymer is a compound that forms long molecular chains. – Compound is two or more ingredients mixed together. – Molecular chains are when molecules link together to form a continuous chain.

Concoction Directions Magic Mud Ingredients: – 3 parts cornstarch – 1 part cold water – Food coloring (optional) Directions: – Stir ingredients together so that they form a liquid, then scoop up a handful and squeeze it. Flubber Ingredients: – 1 tsp. borax – 1 cup white or transparent glue – 1 ¼ cup water – Food coloring (optional) Directions: – In one container, combine half the water, food coloring, and borax until dissolved – In another container, combine the rest of the water and glue. – Slowly stir the glue mixture into to borax mixture. As it forms a ball, work it with your hands.

Follow-up Questions Magic Mud What qualities does it have of being a solid? Liquid? What do you think will happen if you try and slap the surface with out hand? What really happens? What does it feel like on your hand? Laying flat on a table and if you try to put your finger in it? Flubber What do you notice about the temperature of the slime? What happens if you try stretching it slowly? What happens if you pull it apart quickly? Does it bounce? Can you blow bubbles in it? (DO NOT PUT IT IN YOUR MOUTH!!!) What do you think would happen if you made it with half the borax? Endothermic reaction- the drop in temperature that occurs when the borax and glue combine. Exothermic reaction-when chemical reactions create more heat
