Environmental Sustainability at XXXXXXX College

Greenspace Durham University is committed to environmental sustainability. Greenspace - the University's Environment Team: Plans and implements the University's Environmental Plans, Policies and Procedures. Coordinates environmental initiatives across the University. Works very closely with Staff Environment Champions and Student Environment Reps. Low Carbon Technologies Energy WasteWaterBiodiversityFairtrade TravelProcurement

Carbon Management The university has committed to an ambitious carbon reduction target in line with the HEFCE sector-wide target of a 43% reduction in carbon emissions by 2020 (based on a 2005 baseline). We therefore need to significantly reduce the amount of electricity, gas and water that we use and this is the responsibility of all University students and staff.

All electrical equipment in the University is to be labelled with a Green, Amber or Red sticker: Green sticker - Item may be switched off E.g. Lamps, Printers, Hair Straighteners, Chargers etc. Amber sticker - Please ask before switching off E.g. Laptop (please set laptops to hibernate after 15 minutes). Red sticker - Do not switch off E.g. Medical fridge, radio alarm clock. Please label all items in your room by when? (Red stickers can be requested from College Reception for certain items). Beat the Baseload

Electricity Switch off all non-essential lights. Switch of all non-essential equipment (use the Beat the Baseload stickers). Unplug chargers once the item is fully charged. Setup your laptop to hibernate after 15 minutes. Kettles - only boil the water you need (cover the filament).

Heating The University’s Energy Management Strategy states that residential rooms will be heated to 20 o C at set times throughout the day. Wear appropriate clothing e.g. jumpers in winter. Close doors/windows/ curtains to preserve heat. If the radiator in your room has a Thermostatic Radiator valve then please set it to 3. Please do not set the TRV to the maximum or minimum levels as this interfere with the building's heating controls. Your radiator will turn off when your room has reached temperature and turn on during heating times when your room is under temperature. If your room is frequently too hot or too cold, please report this to Reception.

Waste Prevent Waste wherever possible Take your own mug to YUM and get 10p off the price off a hot drink. Print double-sided/ two-to-a-page. Donate unwanted items to charity shops or the Green Move Out Scheme. Love Food Hate Waste Only take the food you need from hall – ask for a smaller portion if the portion is too large and you can go back and help yourself to potatoes and salad.

Recycling Most items can be recycled: Paper, plastic, glass, tins, aerosols, batteries, printer cartridges, yogurt pots, YUM packaging, cans, pizza boxes… Avoid contamination: Place items in the correct recycling bins and ensure food containers are scraped out first. Refer to the ‘Recycling Guide’ or ask your Staff Environment Champion or Student Environment Rep.

Water Reduce the amount of time you spend showering to save energy and water (please do not remove timers from the showers). Do not leave the tap running when washing up or cleaning your teeth. Report any dripping taps or showers to college reception.
